29 Second CA! Analysis

Post by elmura » Mon Feb 11, 2019 7:05 pm

Hey PAPers,
I've been using a Resmed Autoset for a few months now and still analysing my sleep and tweaking settings to get a better night sleep.
A big recommendation for anyone interested in analysing their sleep in conjunction with Sleepyhead is a fitness tracker that monitors sleep in detail. I've just started using a Fitbit Ionic now after using the Fitbit Alta which was vague.

I've read much on this and other forums, watched lots of reviews on masks, watched lots about issues surrounding troubles with Sleep Apnoea. Making adjustments to mask fitting, trying different settings & masks.

On my report last night (which is one of my best results) I found a 29 second Clear Airways Apnoea that was concerning. Cross referencing my Fitbit app, I was in LIGHT sleep with a brief Awake period that coincided with the CA. I realise that most CA's are just short pauses during movement, clearing throat, adjusting the mask or the body's CO2 blood level balancing. However, what I can't fathom is myself stopping breathing for 29 seconds for those events.

Details of Sleepyhead showed that just prior, I had a big Tidal Volume just before (largest of the night).
It appears I took a series of deep breaths followed by nothing for half a minute.
Seems excessively long to me.

Doesn't look like anything to me.

No recovery breaths afterwards, nada.

Worrying for no reason.

Hold your breath for half a minute while wearing an oximeter, you probably won't even notice any change in oxygen level.

a central doesn't have a recovery breath, nor deep breaths before hand. You chart show an increase in tidal volume preceding the clear air way event. I think it was just your body waiting for the co2 to build up to trigger a breath.
