I have a dream
I have a dream
Here's to a dream that should have been. Dr Martin Luther King born 15 January 1929. I was 7 years old at the time and didn't understand who he was, but I do remember when he was assassinated it was announced on TV. I remember how deeply it affected my Mom when I told her that he had been killed.
May we someday as a nation listen and follow what he preached.

Re: I have a dream
I went to the library the next day and checked out a book of his sermons. This was a book that couldn't be put down until finished. King was one of the greatest American leaders.
Re: I have a dream
We've moved closer to that dream in many ways since his death. Unfortunately, there's been in severe blip in our progress in the last two years.
Of course, full realization of this dream remains elusive, but I hope we move further towards it.

Re: I have a dream
Talk of people coming over our southern border being "rapists," "murderers," and carrying diseases is certainly a step backwards. This is especially so, given that so many of them have darker skin (which is generally understood but usually not explicitly mentioned). Forcibly separating parents from children is certainly not consistent with that dream. Attacking DACA is certainly not consistent, given that those in question were under age when they entered the country (and thus didn't have much say in the matter).
Voter suppression operations in Georgia (aimed primarily at African Americans) and in North Dakota (aimed at the indigenous population) are certainly a contrary to that dream.

Re: I have a dream
I never speak or write of political things. I speak of God which is controversy enough for me, but IN HONOR of the BEAUTIFUL Martin Luther King, who was taken from the world before I entered, I will comment to this thoughtless statement.
I do NOT believe that it is "generally understood".
Quite the opposite, to USE such a statement as a political divide to make a point is precisely what Dr. King dreamed to END!
SHAME ON YOU, DH!
Your statement should show any "thinking person" that there are no doubt as many people who 'do not want the wall' wrongly thinking about "skin color" as there might be in the group who stands WITH the President and have evil hearts and thoughts. These are two completely separate issues! The worst is no doubt those who use this 'divide' under the *GUISE* for confusing real issues. As YOU tried to do here.
I'm in a pocket of the south that is very supportive of President Trump and who are revitalized in their love of Our Country.
Again, *I*, personally, don't join the parties but I am deeply touched by witnessing the very old to the very young who are coming out and showing patriotism and a real love and hopefulness that I haven't seen in many many years.
I never get the inkling that "race" has anything to do with open borders from these folks. Of course there are idiots who are both in favor of the securing the border ...and ... happen to be racist - but they are shunned and most would LOVE to throw them over a wall.
I can't believe you would write such a racist thing on a Dr. Martin Luther King thread!
I'd be disgusted if the content of your character weren't such a "known entity of ignorance"

Grace... maybe you should reread DH's post. I certainly didn't read it the way you did! His post is so obviously not racist; in fact, quite the opposite.

Re: I have a dream
LucyHere, with respect, I quoted the line I found racist. A line insinuating that skin color was "generally understood" to be reason people might support border security. I still feel like that is a very low blow to "sneak in" to use or insinuate 'skin color' to make a point or divide people particularly on an "I Have a Dream thread".
If I misunderstood you DH, and you understand that most, if not all, of the people who support the President and are in favor of "The Wall" do not in any way form their opinions based on skin color, then please accept my apology for misreading and misunderstanding your words.
Though I won't be commenting politically again.
~~~it's definitely not *my* thing. Instead let me just paste a few wonderful quotes from the enlightened MARTIN LUTHER KING ~~~
“There comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but he must take it because conscience tells him it is right.”
― Martin Luther King Jr., A Testament of Hope: The Essential Writings and Speeches
“Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity.”
― Martin Luther King Jr.
“In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.”
― Martin Luther King Jr.
“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”
― Martin Luther King Jr., I Have a Dream: Writings and Speeches That Changed the World
“I have decided to stick to love...Hate is too great a burden to bear.”
― Martin Luther King Jr., A Testament of Hope: The Essential Writings and Speeches
