CPAPTalk and Sleephead Article

Post by Gator5000e » Fri Nov 16, 2018 7:39 am

I just saw this article that discusses this board as well as apneaboard.com (in good terms) and the Sleephead software and how some machine manufacturers had tried to stop the development of the software. It also discusses why these boards are so valuable to many Apnea patients. I thought it would be of interest to the members.

Excellent article. Both cpaptalk.com and the Apnea Board are valuable forums providing helpful resources for the self management of health. Cpaptalk.com trends to be more entertaining. It is frequented by some challenging members. The sniping and mean spiritedness of these characters can diminish the effectiveness of their advice and turn off new forum members seeking advice. The forum moderator does a fairly good job of reigning in the mayhem. I anticipate that this post will receive responses suggesting that I leave this forum if I do not care for some of the member's posts.

My sleep doctor does exactly what the article says they do. They look at the overall numbers and don't drill down and analyze the data. The PA who I was seeing would see centrals and say I needed this, that and the other but she never looked to see if any of it was SWJ as Pugsy and Pale teach us about.

Thanks for the article. This forum has been such a blessing to me. I am no longer alone. This community has all the quirks of a true "family" (disfunction and all). Thank you all!!

At approximately the same time, I posted a similar article.

It appears that this is classic case of "crossing in the mail."

Huh...crossed in the mail 12 hours difference....you really need to watch times before trying to make excuses.
Or maybe just bother to read the new posts on the main forum page would be a good start.

Well, you know, maybe time runs differently in the alternate dimension DH inhabits.

I just now had time to read the full article. It is absolutely appalling that BigCPAP, BigMedical and the FDA conspire to stop us from managing our health. Like Michelle Obama, I am disgusted at my country when I think of this. Government organizations can be cruel and oppressive.

It's really in the manufacturer's interest that patients should be successful with CPAP (which for many means using Sleepyhead). Here's why:

• A patient who is able to get a his (or her) therapy working well is more likely to be compliant. This means that the patient will more likely meet the compliance requirements and the insurance will pay for the machine. A compliant patient will likely order supplies (mask, headgear, filters, water chambers, etc.), and will live to need a replacement machine. A non-compliant patient will not order supplies or a replacement machine, whether the insurance company took back the machine or not.
• A larger pool of successful/compliant patients will mean that more friends, coworkers, relatives and acquaintances will seek diagnosis and treatment (many of whom will end up using a CPAP machine).
• It would make CPAP use more feasible in underdeveloped countries. All you need is the machine, access to supplies, access to reliable electricity, access to a desktop or laptop computer, and access to the internet (admittedly, some of these might not always be the case).
