ResMed iVAPS - First Use for Baseline
ResMed iVAPS - First Use for Baseline
Hello,
I just got the ResMed iVAPS S9. unused, from my uncle. I have an ordinary CPAP that I use for snoring, low pressure settings, and would like to use this one. I had an Auto CPAP years ago that worked much better and I would like to return to the automatic mode. This S9, however, is much more complex than my old Auto CPAP (Resmed which failed after 6 years).
I am 5'9", weigh 184 lbs or 85kg.
Is there a baseline setting to start to monitor, or should I just lay down and breath through the machine for an hour and then look at the data?
Not sure how someone 'starts' to use this without any baseline data to begin with...
I have installed the Resscan software, so will be ready to use it.

The IVAPS doesn't have auto pressure adjusting like the Autoset did. It's meant to take care of people with advanced breathing issues, so it won't act exactly the same.jjatweb wrote: ↑Mon Sep 10, 2018 10:01 pmHello,

Re: ResMed iVAPS - First Use for Baseline
Ahh, good to know! I had C-Flex in the past that ranged from 4 to 8 cm H2O.
Now I know the general consensus is that I did not need C-Flex for such low pressures. So when my C-Flex machine failed I bought an ordinary CPAP and set it for 4 cm, after trying other pressures.
4cm works for most of the time but on occasion I need 8cm pressure. So my sleep with the C-Flex was superior because of its automatic mode, and I do not agree with the general consensus based on my experience.
If I use 8cm on my CPAP it is too much pressure and I tend to open my lips to let the pressure out, while I sleep. That results in a noise that wakes up my partner, just like my snoring.
The C-Flex was awesome as it also adjusted for inhalation and exhalation. Whatever algorithm they used worked for me. I also notice that I get the 'cough' from using an ordinary CPAP, whereas I never had the 'cough' from the C-Flex.
I was hoping this new machine would be able to adjust like the C-Flex. It does have auto mode, but you are saying it is not auto pressure? I get the sense that it does adjust the pressure.

The full model is: S9 VPAP™ ST-A with intelligent Volume-Assured Pressure Support (iVAPS)
I assumed 'volume-assured pressure support' would act similar to C-Flex and the Autopap

i'm sorry i don't have much to add. besides, you are in good hands with palerider.
however, if you want to read up a bit about your machine, go here-

Re: ResMed iVAPS - First Use for Baseline
No, not at all.
*flex is a *respironics* pressure relief system that drops the pressure a little when you start to exhale. It doesn't have anything to do with the machine being an auto.
You said you had a resmed auto. resmed doesn't have cflex, it has EPR, which sort of does the same thing, provides an exhale relief.
iVAPS is a wholly different beast, it monitors every breath (no auto machine does that) and *responds* to every breath, to make sure that you're inhaling as much as you should (it's targeted for people that have lung conditions, like COPD, or other respiratory diseases).
Since it sounds like your needs are modest, it may work for you, but it's like swatting a fly with an bazooka round.

Without having the clinical manual of the machine can be set in S mode we might be able to configure it in a way the works for you but as Palerider says this is a specialist machine designed to treat a specific medical condition.

Re: ResMed iVAPS - First Use for Baseline
You won't be able to turn this machine into an APAP. You could turn it on spontaneous (s) mode and try out plain bi-level to see if it's comfortable for you as opposed to a fixed CPAP pressure. This may allow you a lower pressure (EPAP/CPAP level) on exhale which could possibly improve comfort. Nothing will be auto-adjusting for you though.
But make sure it's definitely on just plain (s) mode, and not spontaneous/timed (t), timed (t), iVAPS, or pressure assist-control (PAC) as those can be potentially dangerous if you don't know what you're doing.
If it were ME, aka I am not suggesting you do this necessarily, I would turn on S mode and just run it at 8 IPAP / 4 EPAP and see what happens, and see how you feel. It's helpful to read over the clinical manual but a lot of it may not apply to you since the ST-A model is primarily designed to address respiratory disorders.
Also, you could probably sell this machine and just buy a ResMed APAP that is fully data capable.
