Autopap or bipap

Post by Michelesleeps » Thu Jan 04, 2018 1:42 pm

I think my sleep center said I should get a CPAP with automatic features which I guess is essentially an apap right? Also, why doesn't everyone get a bipap? Wouldn't that be more comfortable to be able to exhale?

Bipaps are more expensive . . .

Most new CPAPs have exhale pressure relief.....EPR on ResMed models.

My MD indicated this indeed was a cost issue with the insurance companies. I had to demonstrate that I could not tolerate CPAP first.

Breathing out against a high pressure is easy for me. I don't like to have the pressure cycling up and down with each breath.

Because most people don't need them.

Find a used auto pap on Craig's list. Example would be a remstar auto M with A- flex, not C-flex. I bought a used one with c- flex when traveling. I hated it, the fast inhale killed me after using my resmed bipap ASV advanced. I tolerated it until I found the same one with A- flex. Now I don't like having to use the ramp button from waking with the higher pressure, but I do like the slow ramp on inhale like my bipap. As you know my bipap ASV knows I no longer need the pressure and drops it for me, the pressure doesn't wake me now. That's why I bought a Respironics bipap ASV on crsigs list saturday. It read similar traits to my advanced so I'm sure I'll be fine with it traveling.

If you want a bipap right out of the shoot, you can do so. Just tell your doc you are paying out of pocket and no insurance will be involved. Then buy either a used machine, open box machine or new machine from an online place. Some people have that kind of money.

However, the vast majority of people are helped with an APAP and don't need a Bipap. There is about $1000 difference, so you can understand why you should have some justification for that.
