Stuffy Noses, Can't sleep with CPAP on?

Post by ajwagner » Wed Oct 20, 2004 7:01 pm

Sometimes my nose is sooooo plugged up that I can't stand it. I try using nasal sprays, over the counter medication for colds, allergies....nothing seems to help sometimes. Any ideas?

On nights when nothing will unstop a stuffy nose, it's probably best to just give in... use a full face mask on those nights so you can breathe through your mouth. You might want to turn your heated humidifier up a notch or two, since breathing through your mouth is going to dry it out - a lot.

The ResMed Ultra Mirage FF mask and the Fisher and Paykel HC431 are good choices for a full face mask, imho.

Stuffy noses

Hi

I' too had problems with a stuffy nose, near to inpossible to breath thru it. I suggust going see a ENT dr. You might have nasal deformity like me can be inheritated, I had the same as my auntie's nose all blocked up and deforemed and had to be drilled open.[before the new techquies currentaly used]

As the dr's and surgeons had to shave my inside of my nose to open up the airways. My proccedure was a tubinate reduction, my tubinated [air con to heat the air before it goes in the lungs] mine was so swollen that they had to shave it all back to open up a airway for my to breath thru my nose.
Now I breath better with CPAP and the airways are clear, very rarely I get blocked, if so mainly mucus....easy to get rid off.

I now get blood noses quite often , but it better then been blocked all year round and unable to have the full benifits of CPAP because your nose is stuffed!!! I have a lost my smell but it doesn't bother me. IF I get conguested I use some anti congustant or saline sprays....work quite well.
Been on CPAP for a while.....I had moderate apenoa

Full face masks are sometimes the best answer, but sometimes can be hard to get(at least here for me). Prescription nasal steroid sprays can help. So can antihistimines. Sometimes one needs to add an in line humidifier, either heated (best) or flow through.

The breath easy strips can actually help. So can several of the snore relief things sold in catalogs. I can't think of their names right now, they essentially hold your nose open wider.

My best results came with the use of a hypertonic saline nasal / sinus wash. Fancy name for salt water with more salt than your bloodsysterm. 1 Tbsp ice cream salt to 1 tsp baking soda to 1 quart water. I like the ent sol delivery tube, but old fashioned nasal things (can't remember the correct word now) work also. This takes about a month to work.

hope you can find the method which works for you.
