Question for Nuance Mask Wearers

Post by Lahree » Thu Sep 07, 2017 11:32 am

For those of you who have a Nuance mask: When you have it on, does the underside of the mask rest against your upper lip? I had mine "professionally" adjusted by a sleep tech, but she is the same one who jammed the Amara View mask on so tight, I looked like a Borg. The mask and I were "one."

Also, do you get skin irritations under your nose, in your nose or on your lip AND do you have any problems sleeping on your side?

Thanks you fabulous people!

Disclaimer: Yes, that was more than one question.

I have used the Nuance in the past but it has been so long ago that I don't remember where it rested.

No mask should cause abrasions/skin irritations/sores/blisters anywhere and if they do they are either improperly fitted (usually too tight), wrong size or simply not the ideal mask for a person's face.

For inside the nostril issue...try next size up. If the pillow is on the small side and/or the tension is a bit too snug the pillows will try to climb up inside the nostrils and they shouldn't do that. It hurts like the devil and can make it hard to breathe as it can cause the pillows to collapse a bit which makes them even more likely to try to climb up inside the nostril.
Nasal pillows should never touch anything inside the nose. Only the very teeny tiny tip of the inner cone should actually be inside the nose and it should never touch the wall inside the nose. It should sit there and not touch anything.

Side sleeping...that's probably 90% of my sleeping position. Never have used anything but a nasal pillow mask except for brief experiments with something else.

I used the Nuance nasal pillows until my recent discovery of the Airfit P10. My Nuance did indeed sit just above my upper lip, sort of resting on it, but not at all uncomfortable. Tightening it to get it up higher only resulted in a sore nose.

I used lanolin around my nasal openings to prevent irritation, so it was not an issue for me.

No difficulty sleeping on my side, as long as I didn't mash my face deep into the pillow. I sometimes had a slight leak as the pillows moved a bit while I was repositioning myself in bed, but it was easily fixed.

I followed great advice here (probably from Pugsy) about pulling the nasal pillows slightly away from my nose when first turning on the machine for the night. This would allow the pillows to fill with air. Then gently press them against the nose. Made for greater comfort and better seal. Also, a slightly looser fit gives a better seal than a tighter fit. Seems counter-intuitive, but it works.
