Just how old is your CPAP?

Post by rustynail » Mon Nov 20, 2006 3:48 am

Thought it might be interesting to see how many of us are using older equipment and which. I have had my cpap (Charles) for 8yrs 4mo and have only once taken a short nap without it, paid for dearly with a humdinger of a headache.

Every time I get asked what cpap I use nobody seems to know it so I took a few shots (hic) and thought I'd do a show and tell..... I placed one of the last bottles of wonderful, screaming yellow American mustard next to it (Walmarts here in Germany is closing - there goes my relish and mustard) to give a feel for size. (22.5cmW/24.5cmH/30.5cmD)

Tricia: hmmm, it's always waiting for me to come to bed, I always sleep next to it, it makes noise, it keeps me awake sometimes, and helps me fall asleep too....YEP, it gets a name!

Tricia,

Thanks for the pictures. It's interesting to me to see pictures of the predecessors of the current equipment.....they're kind of hard to find. Even though the principle is still the same, the technology had really taken off in the last few years.
Prior to early 2005, I didn't know anything about this therapy. I probably had OSA for many years in various degrees until it finally got to the point it did.

Best wishes,

It would seem that so far you and "Charles" hold the cpap happy couple record.

hmmm never thought of naming my new bed partner.
Anyone else name theirs?

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, body totally worn out and screaming,WOO HOO what a ride!

Rustynail, That is a wow machine - when you decide to retire it please let me buy it for my cpap museum (but, I am sure that with such a long close relationship you will want to keep it yourself)

The oldest / biggest one I have to date is an original Bipap S/T (big box).
But, I did recently get one machine that is a 'doozey' - the Respironics Quartet. This machine is dated 1998 and is actually a clinical machine - the insides are a sight to behold - some incredible plumbing & sensor lines (I will provide photos of the insides soon). It can do 4-functions = Auto, Bilevel, Cpap and split-night studies (why they called it the Quartet). It is noisy compared to the latest machines.

I have done some pics of a Resmed S8 (the S8 is good for size comparisons) with ...

1) An original Bipap S/T
2) A Puritan Bennet PB320 Bilevel
3) My current favorite PB330 Bilevel (no good for nightly data but low on noise & very small for what it is )

I'll append a link to the pics ito this post n about 1-2 hours.

Enjoy

My first Cpap was a Tranquility Quest. I think made by Respironics. I had no insurance so my family MD wrote me a prescription and I rented it. But could never find a mask that I could tolerate, so I gave up. If only I had known then what I know now. Maybe I would have been in much better health today. Who knows tho! That must have been 10 or 12 years ago. Maybe more.

Very interesting pic. Strange color indeed ... is that a German outlet plug? Also noticed that it measures pressure in millibars.

Mine is pretty old. It even came with its own carring case. I've never been able to figure out what to do with the extra attachements though.

As does this, my friend, the girlyman. My 12 year old nephew plays with star wars action figures. Can you come over and play?

Dude, a few people have PM'd me about you, asking me to not
"ENCOURAGE THE A-HOLE" ...so I won't be replying to you on the forum, or in future PM's to you. So kindly do us all a favor and STFU!

Thanks!
This is the PM I get from Vader. That took a lot of courage. Don't ever PM me DUDE. Say it in front of everyone if you're going to say it.

Thanks for posting the pictures, rustynail! With the handle on top, it reminds me of watching the sport of Curling in the Winter Olympics.

I can't even guess at the age of the old borrowed cpap I still have stored away in a box. Like elliejose's, it's an old Healthdyne Tranquility Quest. Healthdyne was bought out by Respironics at some time in the past.

The Tranquility got me started. Heavy and noisy, but it worked. Still does. I used to drag it out on stormy nights, but now I use a neat little battery operated CPAP machine during thunderstorms.

Is that a cpappro I spy on the left in the picture of the masks, Tricia?

I was using my old Healthdyne Tranquilty Plus until a couple weeks ago. It still works, but about ready to kick the bucket. At least 8+ yrs old. I never slept a night without it.

11 years with a Sullivan...........

Post by JohnD » Sun Nov 26, 2006 12:06 am

I had my old cpap for at least 11 years....a Sullivan V Plus, made in Australia around 1995. It has no way to check the pressure other than bringing it in to a DME and attaching a pressure gauge to it.

What happened to the Sullivan company?

There is NO comparison to my new Respironics M series.....I feel so much better with this Auto pap, it's unreal. I have been able to get my AHI's to 1.0!

Old units/mold units

Post by resprob » Sun Nov 26, 2006 12:29 am

I have delivewred cpap machines for about 15 years and note many old units seemed to carry dust and mold in the blowers. I would highly suggest replacing them at least every 5 years and cleaning the humidifier water/chamber daily
