1. Swift? 2. Power Outages

Post by VancouverBreeze » Sat Feb 19, 2005 3:19 pm

Hello everyone again,

Thanks restedgal and titrator for the suggestions about the breeze and hairloss.

1. Two questions about the swift. How loud is the vent vis-a-vis the breeze? I've heard (no pun intended!) that it is loud. Is it loud loud?

2. Does anyone have experience of using a CPAP during a power outage. I do not have the back-up power connected. I assume the CPAP would stop, and I would be woken up by the difficulty of sucking hair through the machine and a 6 foot hose....either that or I would die trying!!! What's it going to be? Anything I should be concerned about?
(I research the impact of earthquakes on urban environments, so I'm perhaps too sensitive to this risk,,,but it can/has/will happen one day.

Thanks again!!

I use the swift and the only noise I hear is myself breathing at low pressure. I ordered the Breeze and can let you know next wk. I want to try it because I am a side sleeper and the swift, whistles, hisses, and moves TOO MUCH when I go to my side. So I have to return to back sleeping & is how I start out , that, or turning my head sort-of sideways but it's not comfortable like before the swift. But swift is fairly quiet. I use the 420E and it's quiet too, I can hear it when it raises my pressure, sort of low whining sound, but it's fairly quiet.

I wouldn't worry too much. Waking up because you can't get enough oxygen is why we're all so tired when trying to sleep with untreated apnea. If we were prone to sleeping through low-o2 situations, many of us would already be dead.

There are lots of people who report (especially early on) waking up with their mask off and no recollection of taking it off. I've seen several cases where when some underlying breathing issue was resolved (like sinuses closing up after a certain amount of time) the behavior of removing the mask stopped.

I don't think you need to worry.

Liam, who never thought he'd be happy to be sucking on a hose.

Darren, I hear almost no sound at all when I'm exhaling with the Breeze. There is a definite shuuuuusssh sound when I inhale with it.

With both Swifts I've had, there is a steady whoooosh sound down at the pillows cylinder all the time, and noticeably also through the small diameter attached hose if I happened to be lying on the hose side. I route the hose upward on all my masks, to a hanger above the headboard, to keep hose out of my way when I turn over. Either way though, lying on the hose side or the other side, the most bothersome noise to me as a side sleeper was from the Swift's wide angle diffused exhaust holes - hitting bed covers, pillow, arm, extra pillow that I like to drape my arm over when side sleeping.

If it weren't for the increased sound of the exhaust hitting stuff all the time, I'd have liked the Swift quite well - even though it was a bit more apt to gouge the inside of a nostril while side sleeping than my Breeze ever has. Having nothing in front of the eyes was the nicest thing about the Swift during the several weeks I tried to use either of my Swifts. The exhaust sound finally was too much for me, and the Breeze was just more comfortable. Many get along fine with the Swift. They are both very good interfaces, imho.

I inherited a Breeze after my wife's brush with CPAP a few years ago (a take-it-home-and-try-it sleep doc... arghh) and have used it on-and-off for the last year. For a while, I had a sensation that I wasn't getting enough air or not exhausting enough CO2, but I think it was all in my head. I've recently been using it the majority of the time.

The noise to me is sort of a turbulent, bubbling sort of sound on inhale (yes, even when it is dry). It isn't too bad and I've gotten used to it. I very recently got a Swift also and (as rested gal reports) I find it to be quite a bit noisier than the Breeze. I like the feel of it, but I can't take the noise although I am still going to tinker with it to see if I can quiet it down.

I've found that I like the way the Breeze works better than my nasal masks with my new PB 420E. Less leakage, more consistant pressures...
