New Guy.... 1st week with CPAP - Got some ?'s

Post by captainvette » Sun Sep 24, 2006 3:00 pm

Kinda a long story so you can skip it and get right down to the numbers of you want.....

Around 7 years ago my then girlfriend informed my about my incredible snoring and the fact that I would stop breathing at night. So I went down and had a sleep study done.

Can you guess what they told me ?

Well I was young and dumb... there was no way in hell a 23 year old was going to wear some mask at night to sleep. How is that gonna look with the ladies?

Fast forward 7 years I am 30 now and married. At least 4 nights a week my wife ends up sleeping in the guest bedroom cause she says my snoring is so bad. My throat is usually raw in the mornings and I am starting to generally feel lousily all the time.

My mom (who had been diagnosed and has been on CPAP for a year) kept telling me that its all due to my sleep apnea. One day my mom shows up at my house with her CPAP machine and forces me to use it for 1 night. So I did…… my wife said it was magic and I did feel a little more rested.

Last week I called my Doc and asked him to look up my sleep study from 7 years ago and write me a prescription for CPAP. An hour later he faxed over a prescription for a CPAP with 14cm.

I went to https://www.cpap.com and ordered a RemStar M Series Pro C-Flex w/ Humidifier and Remsed Ultra Mirage FF mask

For my first week using it my 7 day average according to the machine is

AHI = 4.4
Ave Leak = 45.7
Ave Treatment time = 5.6 hours per night

I have been watching these numbers change every day . The AHI keeps going down every night it was 8.9 at the end of the first night. The leaks are down a little too from 48.6 but I think its still leaking too much... however I dot feel any leaks on my face.

Is this leak number acceptable??

I was thinking I should get the software so I can look at my detailed readings.

Thanks.
Mike

Hello Mike.

Welcome to the forum.
Ya know....."Mother knows best".......

Numbers look OK so far. With the UMFF, you can either get it too loose and it leaks or too tight and it leaks......finding the right tension is the trick. My leak rate varies alot, too.

Hang in there.

Hi Mike,

I agree with Den that your numbers look pretty good. Glad you found your way to using cpap after all (with a little nudging from the women in your life ) and made your way to this board.

Hope you keep feeling better and better.

Your mom loves you - Nice - You are on the right path.

The leak figure may actually only be the 'fixed leak' from your type of mask. If no one can hear squeaks & hisses then it is probably just the vents on the mask.

take a peek at this chart

If you have any further questions most regulars understand this 'fixed leak' rate business & so you will get good answers.

Good luck

You need to list your equiptment in your profile, and let us know your pressure. The software is important is your machine can give the data. Jim
