My humidifier on the escape model

Post by NyNurse33 » Sat Sep 02, 2006 7:48 pm

Is anyone familiar with this? I notice that on the left side it says "warm", but that also seems to be the control for the amount of humidity. Confused and the manual tells me nothing. Does this mean its always delivering warm humidity?

Melissa,

Warm air carries more water molecules than cool/cold air, so the amount of humidity is controlled by how warm the water is. More humidity = more heat (or vice-versa).

Best wishes,

If your machine is an S8 model (I think it is) it should say "warming" on the right side of the LED display. If you press the RIGHT arrow button, it will begin to warm the water prior to actually using the machine ... so it won't be cold when you go bed. I think it will turn itself off if you don't start your machine within 45 minutes after pressing the RIGHT arrow button.

It is the round knob that you dial in to set your temperature ... warmer is clockwise and cooler is counter-clockwise.

Melissa,

I have the same model humidifier as you do. From what I understand about the humidity control is the setting where heating starts is "3", or mid position (couldn't find this in the manual either, got this info from the good people on this site) Up to that point, the humidifier runs in passover mode, where the air passes over the water providing minimum humidification. When I picked up my machine, the RT at the DME suggested I set the control to "2", and adjust it up and down to my comfort.

One night I did try the "warming" feature that Dream Stalker mentioned in his post (press the right button in standby mode, ie LCD reads "Ramping"). Had no reason too, just curious on how the thing worked. That night I experienced a fairly mild case of rainout (nasty way to wake up, this cobra spitting up your nose), and never ventured there again. I actually backed my setting back to 1 1/2 just to be safe.

Many people on this site run there humidifier in passover mode, preferring the cool, less moist air to the warm, humidified air. I just started CPAP this summer, so perhaps in the heating season this winter I'll revisit that round knob. Until then, passover is fine by me. Ken

PS I read another post you made concerning the Escape vs the Elite. I have the Elite, and I do like the fact that you can get your efficacy data right off the LCD. It is limited; new sleep sessions begin at 12:00 noon everyday, so if you happen to sleep past that time (I work occasional backshift), your data is erased (it can still be retirieved with the Resmed Autoset software and reader) for that time period. In light of that, having access to leakage and AHI info has been very helpful in my therapy so far.

Warming

Post by GoofyUT » Sat Sep 02, 2006 11:45 pm

As Roberto mentioned, the "Warming" setting on the LCD is to pre-heat the water before you start the blwoer so that, when you get into bed, it'll begin blowing heated/humidified air right away. it'll also start a slight air flow through the hose, so, if you're on supplemental O2, especially through an O2 concentrator, you can run the concentrator up to pressure and go wash-up, while the S8 is pre-heating and the airflow prevents the accumulation of potentially explosive O2 from the concentrator, in the hose or mask or blower. And, you can do this without having to actually start the S8 until you're ready. S8 Vantages HATE to be blowing into vacant masks, so "warming" avoids this.

Hope this helps.

Funny..I don't have that "warming" feature on my LCD (el crapo machine). This morning when I woke up, for the heck of it, I stuck my finger in the water.....ice cold! Guess I won't make that much of a fuss over it, since I'm going to try and get myself an elite or vantage. Wonder if I'll have to go the DMEs naked to get one......

That previous post was from me, not sure why it didn't log me in.
