P10 mask keeps coming off in the night

Post by Dancers Need Sleep! » Fri Apr 08, 2016 11:38 am

About a week ago I was given a P10 "for her" mask to try, after struggling with the DreamMask for about a month. I actually did get the DreamMask to work for me, but I had to tie it to my face in order to get it to seal properly and the DME and I agreed that this was kind of silly as a long term solution.

I find the P10 fairly comfortable, but I keep waking up with it no longer on my face. At first I thought I was taking it off myself in the night, and that might still be the case, but I have a feeling it's just coming off as I move around during the night. The straps aren't very tight and I sometimes wake up with them having moved too high or low on my head to be doing any good. As far as I can tell they aren't adjustable.

Has anyone had this problem and devised a solution? My first thought is to use hair clips to attach it to my head, but I'm a side sleeper and that sounds uncomfortable...

(apologies if this is an FAQ - I tried searching for P10 and found no matches, which seems unlikely)

I haven't had mine actually come off, but the straps do tend to stretch and move. I put the lower one under my hairline, even though my hair is only like an inch longer. I wash it by hand once a week, and as it stretches I usually need to move the upper strap from about where a headband would go, and lower it more towards the other one. Don't know if this will help you? I too think any kind of hair clip would be painful.

There's more than just the Dreamwear and P10 out there. I've been using the Swift FX nasal pillow mask for several years, and find the headgear for it to be much better than the P10 headgear for me. It is heavier and a little noisier than the P10, but works better for me since it doesn't readjust itself overnight like the P10 did. The Dreamwear was too noisy for me, and, oddly enough, the headgear tended to slip off the back of my head causing me to be awakened by massive leaks.

At my house, I'm playing with the Sleepweaver Elan for the second time. I need a soft mask, at least for a while, and the second time around of trying this mask has proven to be much more successful than the first time. It is working well for me so far, but it's only been 3 days...AHI's of 0.7, 0.0, and 0.4. Hardly long term results, but promising. And it seems to have less leaks at this point than either the p10 or the Swift FX, at least I haven't been awakened as a result of leaks. That's quite unusual for me. My wife finds it quiet as well, which is a blessing *smile*.

Anyways, there's a lot of masks out there to try and see how they work for you. I'd recommend that you try the Swift FX if you haven't already, and like nasal pillow masks.

I also recommend the Swift FX headgear. It adjusts at the top of the head and on both sides. It also comes in a "for her" (smaller) size. It is the same headgear for the Swift FX Nano (nasal mask). I couldn't get the P10 to stay on my head either.

The P10 straps ride up on me too during the night. My solution has been to put the pillows on, then reach back and pull a handful of hair (just like if you were putting your hair in a ponytail) out from between the 2 head straps. Then let that bunch of hair fall down over the bottom strap. The hair will keep the strap from riding up. I was fixing to return my P10 when I first started noticing the straps slipping, but now it stays put as long as I do my hair trick. Good luck to you! It is certainly the quietest and diffuses the air better than any mask I've ever tried!

Hi Dancers, the P10 headgear in pink (for her) is shorter than the headgear in blue. Have you tried washing it to see if it will shrink back a bit? Sometimes the headgear just needs to be washed and dried to shrink back to the original size/ tighter fit. If this doesn't help, you can try hand stitching a couple of places on the headgear (where it won't bother you) to take up some slack. There is a type of thread that has some stretch to it; you can ask about it in the sewing section at your local store.
