7 hours, personal record

Post by davep700 » Wed Mar 02, 2016 11:40 am

Hello all,

After many 1 or 2 hour nights, I last night logged 7 hours 4 minutes on CPAP, a personal record time. I am using a new "memory" foam mattress topper, perhaps that is limiting my movement in bed, which is helpful against mask and hose issues.

Most importantly I had a window partly open and a cool breeze coming through. I guess having the air cool enough is critical for someone like me who otherwise finds the air intolerably stuffy inside a mask. I hope I can keep the air sufficiently cool during the summer with the AC on without drying out my nostrils.

Does anyone use a cool mist room humidifier with CPAP as opposed to the heated humidifier in the machine? And if so would it be possible to keep the humidifier close to, or even pointed to, the machine without damaging its electronics?

Hi Dave700,

Sounds like you just passed a milestone! It took me awhile to get over the waking every few hours and getting uninterrupted sleep. Once I started sleeping 7 hrs at a time, my body craved it! I've been enjoying the cool night air as well for great sleep.

That "stuffy" feeling with the mask is a real problem. Like you I use a nasal mask, not the same brand, but I do know the "stuffy" feeling. My mask has a filter right at the tip of my nose. When I take the mask apart for cleaning, I replace the filter about once every couple of weeks. If I go much longer than that, I get that stuffy feeling. I also do a saline wash and use Flonase as part of my nighttime routine to reduce inflammation and a stuffy feeling.

I did do a quick search and found that cooling eye masks are often purchased with your mask on Amazon. Might be something to try that would easy any sinus inflammation that is causing that stuffy feeling. I'm thinking I may try that this summer.

Again, congratulations on uninterrupted sleep! It's a big deal.

Kind regards,
GB

Thanks. Hopefully I can duplicate the achievement.

I thought at first the stuffy feeling was a mask issue and tried a variety of masks, but it seems to be an air temp issue. For me I guess I become more sensitive to air temperature with the addition of a mask. I am settled now on the Airfit P10 nasal pillows, but looking to try the Sleep weaver when i get it from my provider.

My own experience with a room humidifier blowing toward the CPAP was not at all good. Several years ago before I had a machine with built in humidifier I had placed a mist humidifier near my bed because I had a cold and was really congested. So much water mist got into my machine that the CPAP died. Fortunately I was able to dry the machine in a warm room and it recovered by the following night. I strongly disrecommend having a mist device near the machine. Just in the room would likely be OK.
