Question on PS support
Question on PS support
my settings are 12/17 with a PS of 1. I notice that mt EPAP and my IPAP is always 1 cm apart. My question is if I change my PS to 3 does that mean my EPAP and my IPAP will always be 3 cm apart or will my VPAP vary the ratio of the two as is needed?

Re: Question on PS support
Something is not right here. Are you in a fixed bipap mode and were the above settings what the doctor perscribed? If you were prescribed a EPAP of 12 and IPAP of 17 that is a PS of 5. Pressure Support is the difference between those 2 pressures. When you have PS set at 1 that limits the difference to 1cm above the EPAP.

Re: Question on PS support
If my memory is correct (and some other member more versed in how ResMed machines work is invited to clarify/correct), Resmed machines use the PS parameter to determine the difference between IPAP and EPAP while the machine varies across the prescribed range, while Respironics machines allow the IPAP and EPAP to vary independently but not getting closer than the PS number.
So, on a machine with settings of 17/12 and a PS of 1
Resmed could look like 13/12 or 14/13 or ... 17/16
Respironics could look like 13/12 or 14/12 or ... 16/15 ... up to 17/12 or 17/16,
IPAP varies from 13 to 17 and EPAP varies from 12 to current IPAP-1
At least that is what I think I remember from quite a few years ago. Whether this applies to the new models, I don't know.

Re: Question on PS support
JDS I do think you are right if the machine is in the Vauto mode but if in the fixed mode it would be the way I was thinking. I'm wondering why a bilevel would be limited to a 1cm P.S.?

Re: Question on PS support
the PS IS the difference between epap and ipap.lilly747 wrote:my settings are 12/17 with a PS of 1. I notice that mt EPAP and my IPAP is always 1 cm apart. the resmeds have a set PS, and will be whatever you want it to be.

Re: Question on PS support
Thank you all for responding. I thought it moved in a fixed manner, but I wanted to make sure before I made any changes.
OkyDoky; I had a sleep study and was left bleeding: with an Escape set at 10, AHI of 19 with apnea's 0f 90 sec & up (I found out after I got a data machine). I never did see the sleep Doc. It was Pugsy and D-Dave that saved me. I am very thankful for this board.
Had to change Encore to Escape, brain far*

Re: Question on PS support
you are correct, resmed bilevels have a fixed PS with varying epap (and thus lockstep varying ipap.)JDS74 wrote:If my memory is correct (and some other member more versed in how ResMed machines work is invited to clarify/correct), Resmed machines use the PS parameter to determine the difference between IPAP and EPAP while the machine varies across the prescribed range, while Respironics machines allow the IPAP and EPAP to vary independently but not getting closer than the PS number..
resprionics bilevels have a min and max setting on PS, along with the varying EPAP.

Re: Question on PS support
up to a point, the PS is pretty much for comfort, (it's pretty much the same as EPR on a resmed autoset/elite, except that EPR is limited to a max of 3).lilly747 wrote:Thank you all for responding. I thought it moved in a fixed manner, but I wanted to make sure before I made any changes.

if you want to change it, feel free, but I'd be careful going above 5, (watching your data being more observant of how you feel, etc).
