I have to thank everyone who shared the hair dryer trick. I'm out at a ranch for the weekend and my icon+ wouldn't power . Last night was horrible. Kept waking up choking. Slept maybe an hour. Today I see this and we had the tools and a hair dryer. After taking the bottom off it took less than 2 minutes of hair dryer for the daily to light up! It's working! I can sleep tonight!

I was dreading another night without it

I have been running into the same issue as first described in this thread where If I unplug the cpap ( to move it or travel with it) it usually not operate for a very long time after plugging it back in.

The last time after 24+ hours and reading about moisture and not having the tool to remove the bottom I took the cpap and placedi it on its side with with top off and put it in front of a dehumidifier and a couple hours later I went back and sure enough it was lit up and ready to go. I unplugged it and returned it to the bedroom and it powered up.

I am thinking this may be a good practice to do before I travel to ensure no moisture remains when packing it up.

Just figured I would share.

[quote="dkh7m"]My Icon started doing the same thing about a year ago (I've had it for maybe four years now). It would take anywhere from 1-3 hours to turn on. Recently tho, when I traveled, it wouldn't turn on at all.

I'm pretty sure the problem is moisture from the humidifier getting into the electronics. What I have to do now is remove the bottom plate (exposing the PCs boards) and blow a hair dryer on it for about 5-10 minutes. Eventually it will come back on. Specifically, it's the PC board in the back of the unit that's attached to the power cord (not the one in front attached to the control wheel).

If you end up having to do this, be careful with the T20 torx screws that hold the unit together. One of mine stripped and I ended up cracking part of the housing when I tried to get it apart. Fortunately I was able to superglue the damaged parts back together. But if you break it and you can't keep the unit under pressure, it won't work anymore.

Mine was out of warranty, so I didn't feel too bad taking it apart. But if yours is still under warranty, I'd recommend trying to get it replaced.[/quote

I can't believe , the hair dryer worked first try

i found a fix for the nova. on the left side there is a small thin button on which the info is stored. push it until it pops out. then plug it in. about an inch will poke out. dont pull it out until the power is restored. afteryou will have to completely remove it like a usb. then push it all back in until it clicks. hopefully it works

Hey this fix works. Thank you. Ease out all the T20 torx screws. Easy to strip the screw heads so use an in good shape torx wrench and don’t man handle the screw heads or crack the plastic getting them loose and out. Same for putting it all back together. Gently snug in the screws. Go too fast or over tighten and you’ll crack the plastic and then you have leaks and then your Icon is ruined. Low heat hair dryer for 10 to 20 minutes. Take out the two shaped foam inserts before you start drying/warming up the main circuit board. I’ve done this successfully twice now. It takes time so grab a chair or better yet barstool and get to blow drying. I left my Icon plugged in both times I did this to see when then unit came back on so I knew when to stop blowing. Again many thanks for a simple solution that works.

I have the same issue with my unit and I do not use the humidifier so I do not believe it is the moisture. It is a bad capacitor. I am going to try and find and replace the capacitor and maybe even take a picture or two. I have the fp icon model iconaan-ht. I called FP and they said the model was under recall, but not the serial number I had and it was out of warranty. They told me to contact my doctor/supplier and give them a reference number which was an offer to trade in the unit for $275 for a new one. I am disappointed that this is a known issue and they are not standing behind their medical device. It is about 16 months past warranty so I do understand their point too, but I wish I would have said something last year when I had this issue once. I didn't know it was such a problem as I rarely unplug my machine.

If anyone knows the particular capacitor to replace I would appreciate it.

Thank you,
Doug

I'd had the same symptoms as all of you - it worked okay then stopped working when unplugged for a short time. After being plugged in for a while it would work. This time it stopped working no matter how long it was plugged in.

I contacted Fisher Paykel by phone and email about the unit. They informed me they didn't service machines that were out of warranty because they had no spare parts.
I called the practice that sold me the machine but they said I'd have to talk with the doctor who prescribed the machine and he was no longer with their practice. When I contacted his office I was told that doctor hadn't seen me in his new practice and I'd have to schedule an appointment with him. In short, none of them were any help at all.

I took off the bottom, used a hair dryer for only 2 minutes and BINGO!! it came on!! WOOHOO!!!

Funny that neither FP or either of the doctors' offices informed me of the recall. Does anyone know if it applies to Novo machines or only Icon?

IMHO, the CPAP stuff is a racket. We must pay them each year to renew our prescription for supplies, even though they know we still need the machine. It's under the guise of "making sure the pressure doesn't need to be adjusted" but I think it's all about the $$$. I agree the problem is a capacitor, which means FP knows about the problem but doesn't want to fix it. I'm done with FP and both local sleep docs.

Thanks to all who posted and helped me get my machine working again!!

Nonsense! I haven't been back to my "sleep doctor" since June of 2005 ( brief followup office visit ).
I've purchased ALL of my supplies from online and individual sellers ( mostly forum members ) with and without an Rx ( my original Rx works just fine ).
I decided long ago that I was not going to pay a doctor for the privilege of them to keep writing my prescriptions. For that kind of money, I can buy LOTS of supplies online.

Sounds like you must have had some water in your machine. Congratulations on getting it running again. But, that's another reason why most/many of us have extra/spare/backup machines and other parts.

I did the hair dryer trick without taking off the bottom panel. Don’t know if it was safe or smart, but it did work. Pry about 10 minutes in the underneath, mostly the third closest to power cord. My 10 cents.

My Icon failed Friday night right before this long weekend after the power strip it was connected to had been turned off. I tried the hair dryer trick, but it didn't seem to work. I am hoping that it is still under warranty. If it isn't I will have to go through the hassle of getting a new CPAP (I have an old one that I am using now.). Of course, like lots of you, my original doctor is no longer in practice so I will have a wait. I am wondering if this moisture problem is common for CPAPs. Kind of important since I live in Washington, D.C. in an apartment without air conditioning.
Thanks for any leads.

Doug, what number did you call, and who did you speak with? I would like to trade my unit in on a new one for $275, but my provider said that F&P did not offer them that option. I called the F&P customer care number and spoke with a representative who sounded like I was interrupting her snapchats or something. She kept telling me I had to go thru my provider - and then gave me a list of other providers in my area to try something thru. Totally zero help at all. I would love to get a code for a $275 trade. I like my Icon Auto.

I have totally disassembled my Icon. The power board is not transferring any juice to the transformer section (the input board passes juice to the transformer board thru some long pins that connect to sockets on the input board). I don't find any VISUAL evidence of capacitor failure (bulging, leakage, etc) but there are 2 large caps on the input board. The circuit board is a dual layer board, which makes it hard to follow the circuit paths, but I definitely was able to determine that both input fuses are good. Aside from some spot-checks on the board I can't follow the circuit farf enough to make a guess where it's losing it's path..

I noticed the hours used were updating on my Icon and the clock time was correct. The other information was not changing (% use 30 days, 7 days, etc..). I unplugged my machine to get a better look. It was unplugged for approximately 9 hours and now won't power on.

Makes sense to me some part inside has given up. Capacitor seems reasonable.

FWIW, I couldn't get anywhere with F&P or the providers so I filed a complaint with the FDA. Recall was issued for machines made between 12/10/12 and 12/21/12. Mine was made in August before that so F&P told me to piss off.

F&P has to know this problem affects more machines than those made in that 11 day window!!

Your machine is SIX YEARS OLD.
I wonder if age might be an issue.

My icon is almost 5 years old and wouldn't turn on. I don't use the humidifier but the hair dryer trick worked for me after about 3 min (I had it plugged in so I could see when to stop). The bottom cover was kinda tough to remove after the screws were taken out and it is too easy to strip the plastic that they screw into. When I moved it back to my bed it didn't turn on right away which worried me but it came on later. I didn't see an easy way to remove the circuit board so I could try to figure out why this helped. Thanks everyone!
