AirSense S10 vs. Transcend Auto Travel

Post by doughpat » Sat Jun 06, 2015 9:52 pm

Hi everyone-

I live overseas and would like to purchase a second machine for when I am home visiting family/friends in the states over the summer/winter holidays. I'm curious as to your recommendations between these two:

Resmed AirSense 10. Supposedly this machine is quite a bit smaller (in terms of footprint) than my current S9--I like that. I've been very happy with my S9, so I am inclined to stick with ResMed.

Transcend Auto Travel (with humidifier). This one "sounds" more portable, and looks more 'streamlined', but the folks at CPAP.com said that with the humidifier, it actually is a bit larger than the AirSense! It is significantly lighter, however, and if I ever wanted to use it with battery power, the battery pack looks like it integrates well, rather than the Resmed, which isn't as slick. This machine also sounds like it will be quite a bit louder.

Any thoughts or recommendations? I suppose that, at the end of the day, both units are going to require pretty much identical "pain in the neck" factor as far as breaking them down, packing them up, re-setting them back up at wherever-else-I-am-sleeping-that-night....perhaps I should just try and save a couple of hundred dollars.

(By the way, I am planning on using a HSA in my wife's name to get reimbursed for the cost of this machine--now that I say that outloud, that sounds like a pretty dumb idea)

I actually have both but owned them for only a day. The transcend without humidifier (i do not have the humidifier) is about a third the size of airsense. I would hate to travel with the transcend humidifier because it is another thing to carry, unlike airsense10 where it is built in. And with humidifier i do not think transcend is going to save that much space.

Thanks Hensbill--that was my thought, also. More pieces = more pain-in-the-neck.

Understanding the Transcend (w/o the humidifier) is the optimal solution, has anyone else tried the Transcend to determine the other factors? (Noise, stability, battery run time, etc...)

I have both. I got the Transcend humidifier so that it would be a backup home machine, but I travel without it. For the time that I'm away, I'm okay without the humidity.

I tried the Transcend in its different set-ups (with and without humidity, on battery and plugged in, etc.) at home first. I found that

The battery gave me a full night's use.
With the humidifier attached, it used up all the water, and it also needed to be on a stable surface, as any PAP machine would be.
Traveling and using just the PAP, this thing is very small and light. It works whether it's on a nightstand, the floor, or hanging in between, or on the bed. The easiest way for me to turn it on or off is to pick it up in one hand and bring it where I could see what to touch. Can't do that with the ResMed.
Noise. I have hearing issues, so at home, I heard no noise at all, what with the normal furnace and house noises in the background. (Same with the ResMed.) In an RV in the woods, yes, it made noise. Once I realized that the "wind" I heard blowing was inside the RV with me and it was the Transcend, I focused on it and let it lull me to sleep.

Hope this helps. I'm pleased with it, but that's just me.
