Having trouble with rainout

Post by Jangles » Mon Feb 23, 2015 6:44 pm

I am getting rainout in the nasal pillows and mask hose of my Airfit P10.

-The main hose to the machine has a Respironics hose cover (like snugglehose) on it and was DRY. To be clear, the hose cover is only on the main hose and does not cover the hose that comes attached to the mask and is 15" long.
-Humidifier on my Airsense 10 was set at it's lowest setting of 1.
-Room temp was 60 degrees and a ceiling fan running (wife gets warm at night).
-Using Hose Buddy to suspend hose above my head.

Do I need to get an eight foot snugglehose that goes all the way to the mask?

I DO have the heated hose but really dislike breathing warm air and was hoping to avoid rainout with just a hose cover and low humidity setting.

Thanks!

I wouldn't bother with a Super Size hose cozy. Just add a bit of fleece toward the end, if you're bent on not using a heated hose. But personally...I LIKE the heated hose. It makes more difference in the rainout in winter than in noticeable temp.

Otherwise, bust out the Eddie Rabbit record and start playing "I love a rainy night."

You could try just insulating the short hose...doesn't have to be a fancy cozy. If you have some old socks laying around that are warm and fuzzy....cut a hole in the toe and slide it over the short hose and secure with a bread tie or tape.
I did that to my first 6 ft hose my first winter 5 years ago and it works surprisingly well in a pinch...this was long before heated hoses except for the really expensive heated hose from Australia.

I have general rain out tips here.

Thanks all. Great tips writeup Pugsy, I read every word.

I guess I would rather try heating the hose than running a hose cover all the way to the mask. That sounds too cumbersome and I think the added bulk may mess with the mask seal when I move.

I used very little water so I did not top it off. I noticed that the water chamber was still completely foggy with condensation after 24 hours. Is that normal?

It is in my house especially in the winter because my bedroom is down right cold so whatever warmth the chamber gets heated to it seems to retain it. It doesn't really have anywhere to go in a closed box. It's not something I worry about but I suppose if it bugs someone then they could dump the remaining water in the AM and let it air dry. I always just top off the water at night and not give it a second thought.
