Bags under my eyes!

Post by Mlowry1943 » Fri Feb 13, 2015 10:49 am

I have been using my CPAP for several years but quit when my wife complained about it blurping and squealing at night. I finally got a mask that fits wonderfully and makes no noise at night. However, now i wake up with huge bags under my eyes and my upper lids are also swollen so that I look like a very tired Chinaman. I don't know what would now make my face do this. I am a mouth breather and have always used a mask that covers my mouth and nose. I really like this new mask but I hate looking this way and it lasts half the day even when I soak my face in cold water! HELP!!!

Why not ask a "Chinaman" what he'd do. I hope there are none on this forum to see your note!

Assuming not an allergic response ....swelling or puffiness is usually associated with some sort of fluid retention and eventually goes away because once we are upright the fluid in the facial skin is absorbed downward as gravity helps out.
Why now? Don't know unless for some reason you have changed sleeping position (like face downward more) or something is going on causing you to retain fluid more easily. Perhaps the straps or mask are restricting the circulation a bit.
I get some major puffiness in the bags under my eyes if I sleep more or less face down and I am using a nasal pillow mask that is disgustingly loose. Usually when I have it happen it is mainly on one side that is worse and the side that is more "down".

How timely! I was going to post about this today only call it "small caterpillars" under eyes. I have a small bag or sack that is caterpillar shaped under each eye. It started about after three weeks of using the nasal pillows. It appears to be caused by the arms of the headgear. They each rest on my face and seem to push up my skin under my eyes. I've tried adjusting the headgear and arms but the adjustment doesn't stay in place. The easy answer is to try another brand of nasal pillow but other than caterpillars I really like what I'm using.
