Nasal Pillows Seal

Post by tireddaisey » Sun Nov 30, 2014 11:23 am

Quick question on nasal pillows and seal. Still a newbie here but I seem to be doing OK getting to sleep and am still working on adjusting to in/out breaths with the machine.
My problem comes midway through the night when, rather than fitting just inside my nose, the pillows have formed a vacuum seal up my nose forcing me to pull on the mask to get some relief from the feeling of suffocation. Is this supposed to happen to minimize leaks?
Any suggestions or thoughts appreciated

Sounds like that nasal pillows are too small. Try the next size up. See the "Swift Fx Fitting Tips" post in my blog--same principle even if using a different nasal pillow mask.

If your DME only gave you one size of pillows, call and make a fuss!

Take the three sizes of NPs and try to breathe through them with the hose not connected. It can be very revealing. For me, the small seemed like I could not get enough air.

On occasion, I wake with one or both pillows "cockeyed", and I need to reseat them to breathe well.
I tried the next size up, but that was too large. Maybe if they made half sizes. . . . (That would be way too easy)

I had a similar experience with the AirFit P10 nasal pillows when I used the XSmall size. Moving up to the Small size resolved the issue. Try going up a size and see if that helps.

Thank you all for your responses. I do have the 3 sizes in my box which I had been incorrectly informed by the DME that they were all the SAME size *sigh*. Anyway, got so sleepy last night that I had to hurriedly put my mask on before passing out and was yanking and tugging all night. So tonight I will go up a size and try that. My guess is that when I was fitted it seemed to work but has stretched perhaps?

I appreciate everyone here because otherwise I would be completely lost!

I am not a fan of the ResMed P-10. Too loose. Switch to the ResMed "Swift FX" Nasal Pillow System.

Half sizes?? Now that would be a plus! How about a molding taken for each individual nose size, be it pillows, nasal mask or ffm? insurance would fall down at that one!
