Here is one that sounds promising based on the abstract:

http://www.jaad.org/article/S0190-9622( ... 6/abstract

Exogenous lipoid pneumonia caused by facial application of petrolatum.

Abstract

Exogenous lipoid pneumonia is a well-described entity in the literature. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case that occurred secondary to external application of petrolatum to the face for erythrodermic psoriasis.

Paywalled-- cant read it.

So I suppose it is possible.

Here's a link I just did for a forum search on "Vaseline".

viewtopic/t101985/search.php?keywords=Vaseline

.
See http://www.mayoclinic.org/petroleum-jel ... Q-20057784

This oft incorrectly refereced "study" evaluated putting petroleum jelly (PG) on the inside of the nostrils with mixed results and a bit of conjecture (if the minority of users gets lipid pneumonia, stop the use of PG inside the nostrils). That is quite a different scenario than a bit of PG on the silicone CPAP mask where it meets the face to stop air leaks. This simple step has now nearly eliminated air leaks and I can finally sleep again after 5 years of CPAP therapy !!! Leaks stopped !!! Yes, every morning I wash the mask and my face - minor offset to a good nights sleep!

There is nothing other than anecdotal "evidence" and opinion on the internet in news groups regarding the "dangers" of using petroleum jelly (Vaseline included). I have spent 2 days searching and found nothing in the scientific realm; only non-scientific opinion and hearsay repeated contiunually. The ones most strongly against PG sell a competing product filled with all kinds of stuff as added ingredients - the safety of which is not scientifically evaluated. I will re-evaluate PG use on the mask face mating surface) the moment someone can point me to ANY scientific study showing any real (as opposed to imagined) health danger.

Disclaimer: My opinion is worth what you paid for it. I do not use oxygen in my CPAP therapy. Do not use PG if you use oxygen.

I think some of the advice against using PJ comes from mfgr's who think the silicone will degrade as a result of using it (but some users say it doesn't).

I have noted the difference in consistency between petrolatum and lansinoh.
The lansinoh is very thick and sticky; as opposed to the soft, light texture of the vaseline.
I would suspect the thinner product would aerosolize more easily, (drifting into lungs?)
The Lansinoh is engineered to be used in contact with the mouth and nose of a nursing infant.
One would imagine safety to be a huge priority where a baby is involved.

Has anyone had a mask damaged by Vaseline? Does anyone know of anyone that has been diagnosed with lipid pneumonia that was caused by chronic use of Vaseline around the nose?

I don't recommend Vaseline for anything, but I am not convinced that lanolin is really any safer.

KY is a lousy skin protectant.
According to the searches I just did.......Yes.

Right, because as we all know - they can't put it on the internet if it isn't true!

You also can't dig up old threads on the internet to post on. Jim
