full face mask slides up during night

Post by gingerdos » Mon Aug 25, 2014 8:22 pm

My husband just started using Respironics ComfortGel Blue Full Face Mask . This is his first full face. During the first 2 nights the mask has been sliding up his face uncovering his mouth. He then opens his mouth letting a large volume of air escape.

Any ideas on how to prevent the mask from riding up? I'm wondering if he needs different head gear, maybe having the upper and lower straps further apart.

I want him to get better therapy and I also am having trouble sleeping, the sound of the air leak wakes me up.

Changing the angle of the forehead piece may help.

Ginger, someone here had a solution that surely helped me. You need to make a Velcro strap about 10" long -- your husband will have to measure his own situation. You loop the strap over both of the lower straps so it is under the forward part of the chin. It does not have to be drum-tight. Just tight enough so there is a slight tension if he tries to open his mouth.

Before I tried this, my fullface mask road up over my mouth every night. Now it never does.

For eliminating the other air leaks that are waking you, he should experiment with all adjustments while the mask is at full therapeutic pressure. Make very slight adjustments. Eventually, he will find the sweet spot.

Sleep well!

Make sure it's the correct size mask for him. He may need a larger one. That mask is available up to an extra large. Once he gets the mask eating/slide up controlled it is a comfortable mask (at least for me). The only complaints I have is the disconnect/swivel adapter is hard to remove and the cushion attachment clips lose some retention strength.
