Tired after 3 years.

Post by Zenom » Tue Apr 21, 2015 9:30 am

So I have not had a company (med supply) come in at all, and I have been buying the same mask for 3 years (cheaper on Amazon than through my insurance). No adjustments to my CPAP have been made.

As of the last couple months I have started to feel tired again in the afternoons, where when I first got the CPAP I felt great all day.

I have a Philips Respironics machine with the humidifier. I also use a Mirage Quattro Medium mask. I have noticed that the mask slides around a lot more on me at night and I wake up more during the night as well (than I used too).

I don't want to pay out the nose for another sleep study. What do you all suggest as a course of testing for myself? How would I know what other masks to try? Should I increase pressure? Decrease pressure? I am at a total loss.

Thanks.
Andy

I don't think your machine can report detailed data - I'm pretty sure the "plus" is a brick, but I don't know the Respironics models very well. If I'm wrong, somebody will be along to correct me. If you do have a brick and you want to understand what is going on with your therapy, but you don't want another sleep study, you're going to have to get access to a data capable machine. Do you know anyone with a data capable machine (preferably an APAP) that would loan it to you so you can check things out (some DME's - med supply, as you say - do this, some don't)? If not, you may consider buying an APAP yourself - even if you paid out of pocket, it might cost you less than a sleep study (depending on your insurance) and would give you more control and understanding of the effectiveness of your therapy.

Not everything's about Cpap - have you had other labwork or testing done recently? Gained any weight - even a little can make a diff. in OSA.

I have gained weight, but not more than 10-15 lbs since the sleep study.

I have had blood work taken constantly. I am not going to say that I think it is 100% CPAP, but I think it might be part of it.

Am I able to buy another machine without an RX? Are the measurements the same as far as pressure etc?

The only way to get a machine without an Rx would be on e.g. Craig's list or thru someone (known) here on the forum, but they most likely wouldn't be new, of course. And pressures are set by YOU, they don't come with the machine, or at least only the default low + hi would be entered, both of which would not be what you'd want, but both of which you could certainly set for yourself where you wanted them. It's possible of course that whoever used the machine before you would not have changed their settings back to defaults, but you can move them to wherever you want.

There are trusted members here that do sell used or sometimes 0 hour machines. I have bought from this member with good results.viewtopic/t105070/For-Sale--New-AirSens ... t-650.html
If you find another seller you can always ask for people to report if they have bought from them. Sometimes you can find one on Craigslist but you have to know what you are buying and do it safely.
You might also try http://secondwindcpap.com/ I'm not sure if they require a RX or not.
But if you have had a sleep study you should be able to get a copy of your Sleep Study and RX. And then be able to use it at any provider unless it specifically orders the "brick" which I doubt it does. But it may not be enough to get the auto, you would just have to see what it says. You should have it even if you don't use it.

Your primary care physician or your dentist can write the prescription.

Were you not given (or did you not request) your previous prescription?
If you have it or one that you can obtain through anyone who can write one, you can buy whichever CPAP/APAP you want.
And, has been noted, there are other venues for acquiring these machines.
You need a data-capable machine so you can use the software to see what's happening while you sleep.

I think I can get my old prescription from the old medical supply company. The problem is the doctor who originally prescribed it retired and I have no idea where those medical records are. I can always get another prescription I guess. From my understanding insurance will only cover 1 sleep study. I know the machine I have had a card in it when I first got it. They made me take it back in after 30 days or something like that. Maybe I can get another card to put in there, I just don't know what the procedure for formatting the card etc.

From what I remember it was an SD card.

Here is a site that tells you which machines give you data. https://sleep.tnet.com/equipment/cpapmachines/pr Check the bottom of your blower, after you remove your water, and if the 3 number model number is less than a 450 or 460 then the only info recorded is compliance info such as hours of use and maybe AHI. It doesn't give us types of events ( CA, OA, HA RERA), leaks, flow graphs which are all important in understanding your treatment.
But maybe you do have a data machine and the Ref# on the bottom will tell for sure.

This caught my eye...fragmented sleep will certainly cause issues with how we feel during the day.
So how many hours of sleep are you getting now compared to a while back and how many wake ups do you notice now compared to in the past?
Is it just mask issues waking you up or is it something else?
Recent change in meds? Like add new or stop something?
