AHI recalibrating after short break

My sister says when she gets up to the bathroom her AHI will read 3or4 and then when she gets up in the morning it will read 1 or 2. She adds those numbers together. I have never checked mine when it is off for a minute or 2 but assumed my number in the morning was for the entire night including breaks?

She is using S9 Elite. Mine is auto. Is there a difference? Do they start over when you remove the mask or shut the machine off? Her hours of sleep are accurate and don't start over after a break...just the AHI.

Is she looking at the LCD?
It SHOULD take everything between Noon and Noon (one day to the next) and roll it into one average.
That's one place where the software will come in handy.

Assuming LCD is the window on the front of the device that is where she is looking. I don't usually check mine in the night but I am pretty sure it is the total AHI I am seeing in the morning so I was surprised to hear that hers was giving her two different numbers. She said it has been the same for the 4 nights she has used the machine.

Also, her doctor wouldn't sign for an auto machine but because I had sent her a picture of mine she pointed to one at the DME and said I want that one assuming it was auto because it looked the same. What is sad is that she bought another one from craigslist for her trailer and assumed it was auto as well and it looks like they are both Elite. She was anxious to start tracking with Sleepy Head because her husband has used straight cpap for years and she is curious about details.

I wonder if she needs to adjust a setting to get the AHI right?

Cpaps don't start over when you get up and go back to bed and go back to sleep. You shouldn't add those numbers up. The final number that you see when you get up in the morning will be your number for the whole night. Your cumulative AHI will vary from hour to hour...I can wake up and look at my AHI, then go back to sleep and get up in the morning, and it will be lower or higher than it was when I looked in the middle of the night, that's normal. But that's my AHI for the whole night, and I'm sure that the Elite works the same way.

as others have said, tell your sister to stop being so ocd.

the ahi is an average of events/hours slept from noon to noon.

add more hours without more events, the average goes down, simple enough.

I *never* look at the display on the machine, I pull the data and view it in sleepyhead, because the ahi is pretty meaningless, it doesn't tell you anything other than "it was probably ok" vs "well, there's probably a problem but who knows what it is".

Nothing wrong with an Elite. It's a fully-data-capable machine and other than the fact it won't run in a range of pressures, it'll give virtually the same information as the Autoset.

Yes, it will become clearer when your sister looks at the actual sleep data and can get her arms around what AHI really means. Looking at the graphed data is worth a thousand words *smile*.

I was the one who pushed data machine on her so I felt really bad that she ended up with two that I thought wouldn't give data. What a relief. Thanks.

just remember, 'escape*' and 'cpap' models from resmed are the ones to avoid

For some reason i equated all but the autoset with no pressure range and no data. Good to hear the elite just isn't capable of having a pressure range but she can still see the data.

there's around 13 versions of the s9, and 7 of the a*10 series...

two s9 machines (escape, escape auto) are crap, one as10 machine (cpap) is crap, everything else is full data.
