New to CPAP

Post by froglover » Sat Dec 13, 2014 11:58 am

I was just diagnosed with Sleep Apnea, and started with a ResMed AirFit P10 last night. For about two minutes!
I felt I could hardly breathe. And when I took the mask off, there was a powerful, on-going stream of air that didn't quit till I unplugged the machine.
Is this machine defective?
The Sleep Center office isn't open till Monday.
Not sure how to proceed.
Thanks for any guidance.

What kind of machine and what kind of pressure?

On you P10, what pillow size are you using and how does it sit on your nostrils?

Are you using the ramp? At what settings? And what are your prescribed machine pressures?

Each machine works a little differently to achieve the desired results of cpap... that is why we can help you best if we know which machine you have, and your pressures, etc. You should be able to locate your pressures on your RX for the machine. I doubt that the machine is defective. If I pull my mask off, the machine will blow air until it recognizes that I'm not breathing. I have an auto machine, I don't which machine brand or type yours is. If I do get up during the night I always turn the machine off before I take mask off, to prevent the continued blowing.

no, it's working as designed, it's trying to achieve however much pressure it's set to deliver, which of course, is impossible when you removed the mask.

what did you expect it to do when you took off the mask?

PR, you're too far from new to remember the feeling of WTF?? when you first experienced the strong WHOOSH of air. Lol...you can simply hit the power button to stop airflow. Or start it. Assuming it's plugged in. If you put on the mask while it's gushing air like that, it will quickly settle to feeling normal again. This is also how we wake with huge air leaks when the mask seal is broken.
No worries, unless the power button is malfunctioning, it seems that your machine is fine.

well, I was explaining that, in my normal "just the bare bones" manner, but I really was curious what a person would expect instead of the big whoosh of air.... maybe a gentle stream?

No not defective. You have to turn it off any time you take off your mask.
