Will blocking a nasal pillow affect the machine?

Post by MbMinx » Tue Dec 02, 2014 7:55 am

I have a Mirage Liberty, and it's by far the best mask of all those I tried. It does have an annoying leak, though. The nasal pillow for my non-functioning nostril always leaks. Nothing drastic (not a major leak) but enough to bug the crap out of me and keep me awake if I don't get to sleep before the Ramp function is finished. Last night I stuffed that pillow with a cotton ball, and - vwallah! - no leak! That may have been my best night of sleep yet.
Is there any problem with doing that? The other pillow (for my functioning nostril) is open and I can breathe through my mouth just fine. Will changing the airflow like that affect my machine or my readings?
Thanks!

There wasn't any airflow through the non functioning nostril anyway....I don't see blocking that side causing any problems because that air wasn't going anywhere anyway except to leak and keep you awake.
I can easily get enough air using one nostril and even keeping my mouth shut with my nasal pillow mask. I have it happen sometimes where I wake up and one side is totally closed off....part of the normal nasal cycle I guess...turn over on the other side and it clears up.

just make sure the cotton ball doesn't get blown up in your nose!

(just kidding, the pressures are too low for that to happen)

Speaking of one side blocked - when I have a cold, I will have one side one blocked and one functional for maybe a whole day, and they will then switch just out of the blue - does everyone have this?

Yes, it is quite common. In the daytime, it switches spontaneously,
but you can switch the congested side on purpose by lying with the "open" nostril down.
We call it the gravitational effect on snot.
Usually, my passages unclog right after I mask up.
If I had any idea it would work this well, I would have begged for a cpap decades ago.

It's probably why we have more than one nostril to begin with.
