mix and match

Post by herefishy » Sat Nov 15, 2014 12:28 pm

Anybody mix slimline and regular hoses? I have slimline, but would like to use a regular to go from my machine to my passover humidifier, then the slimline to the mask. I don't really know what the machine does in the way of compensating for the different size hoses.

What humidifier are you using? I assume you're not talking about climate line hose?

I use the H5i in passover mode and it is working quite well as I enter my first winter.

I have interchanged them..it makes no difference on my S9. Mask to H5i Humidifier.

the machine raises the pressure to compensate for pressure losses due to flow through the smaller hose.

I suggest using as short a hose as you can get for the connection to your humidifier, then setting for slimline.

PR, that's what I was thinking, I have a 2 foot hose that should work fine. The humidifier is just a flat passover, used dry, to baffle the noise from the machine. Wasn't sure whether to use the slimline setting or the regular setting, will listen carefully for any struggle the machine is having.

I'm sure there won't be any struggle, whether you can hear it or not

the thing is, the machine makes an educated guess to try and get the right pressure at your face, even though it's measurement point is just before the outlet on the blower. everything from the blower to your face is called the 'circuit', the machine makes adjustments to how it behaves based on what you tell it is in the circuit.

the s9 humidifier.
hose type
hose length
mask type

all of these things affect the pressure that you end up with at the end. some of the old resmed ASVs actually had another sensing hose that ran up to the mask to allow it to measure the pressure there. the newer machines do it in their little computer heads using fancy math

telling the machine you have a slimline hose and then using a standard hose is one of the biggest things you'll notice, I did that once on a machine I'd just picked up on craigslist, and at first I thought it was defective, it seemed to be a good bit higher pressure than I was used to.... then I went "aha!" and set the pressure correctly, and it was fine.

the humidifier setting, of course, is automatic, it knows if the regular humidifier is attached.

adding another humidifier and the extra bit of hose will affect the end result some, but I'd guess it won't be too bad. if you still get good enough numbers and especially if you feel ok, that's what really matters.
