Dr. wants me on Remeron to get some sleep

Post by meister » Sat Feb 19, 2005 9:28 pm

Anyone had any experiences with Remeron and CPAP for better sleep?

I think this would be perfect for LIAM to try.

I have not tried Remeron for sleep, but I HAVE tried it as an anti-depressant, and I can't urge people enough to stay away from this medication.

(Now, having said that, I know that different people react differently to different medications, and I'm clearly an extreme case or this medication would not still be available. This is a cautionary tale, that's all...)

I took a 5 week trial of Remeron (was originally 6 weeks, but stopped when the side effects became clear). During those 5 weeks, I was ravenously hungry all the time. I gained between 20 and 30 lbs over those 5 weeks. When I stopped, I was able to lose it again (slowly). By the way, I'm 6'1" and generally between 230 and 240, so 20-30 lbs isn't as large for me as it might be for a 5'2" person, but it's not a drop in the bucket either.

But the worst side effect was on my memory. I noticed I was having trouble recalling things, which was troubling, but I quit the trial the day I called a friend of mine and was complaining to her about the two above side effects. She said "I know. You told me all about this yesterday."

Now, I didn't remember having discussed that topic with her the day before, but that happens to me often enough, forgetting with whom I've discussed what. But I couldn't recall having spoken with her at all! If asked to swear in court, I would have told you I hadn't spoken with her in over a week. Certainly not a long conversation on my side effects.

So... Clearly this doesn't happen to everyone who takes it (or maybe it does, and they've just forgotten ), but be aware that they are possible side effects.

Liam, personal PDR to the stars.

I hated Remeron. I felt like I had the flu. Liam is right, it works different for different people, but be aware of the side effects.

My regular doctor gave me some samples of Remeron. But, before I tool any, I looked it up on the internet and promptly threw them away. So much for a sleeping aid.
CPAP is wonderful until a cure is found!
