Is Commercial Distilled Water Really Pure & Safe?

Post by EmmyT » Fri Oct 17, 2014 4:17 pm

I've been using my CPAP for about a year and like it. I just wonder if the distilled water we buy in the store is really pure and safe. I know it's supposed to be, but since I'm breathing it in I want to be sure. I'm normally very trusting, but this has me a little nervous. Or is there a particular brand of distilled water that is known to be produced by an honorable company? Thanks very much, EmmyT

oy vey.

prolly better you do like the chunkyfrog and distill it yourself!

protip, distillation works by evaporating water, in a similar way to how a heated humidifier does.

The only reason to use distilled water is to prevent mineral buildup in your humidifier. Tap water is adequate for use, it just means more scrubbing for the container.

Expecting an answer like that for the many plants and companies, doesn't compute. Nothing is sure unless you do it correctly yourself, the wprld is made up of fools that don't do their jobs correctly.

Odds are it's safe, but if it smells funny dump it out, it's cheap! Don't drink it, it's not meang for drinking, but designer water for drinking, with what chemicals added. Jim

It wouldn't make any difference.......nothing "bad" is going to be carried out of the humidifier tank to you with water vapor molecules......they're too small to carry anything.

There's some risk of contamination in the process somewhere. However, it's probably more dangerous to drink contaminated water than to breathe the vapors from a CPAP from contaminated water. With drinking the water, you get everything. With CPAP humidification, most things that might be in the water get left behind in the water tank.

There's also risk of contamination in bottled drinking water, soft drinks, commercially prepared food, fresh vegetables, meat, poultry, drugs, tap water, eggs, etc. All of these are probably more dangerous than distilled water.

I used "Wally's" distilled water for a year or so at first, and buy some when on vacation, or when I need to replace a jug.

That's ALL I've ever used. 80-some cents a gallon.

I've even bought some in YOUR town, Chunky.

That's very true. I worked with a woman who contracted Légionnaire's Disease, and the result of the investigation was that there was a high probability that she got it from the shower.
