OSA and Brain Damage

Post by kteague » Fri Oct 17, 2014 6:12 pm

Saw this link posted on Twitter by someone I "met" through this forum quite some time ago. Since I haven't seen it posted here yet, figured I'd do the honors...

Thanks for posting this kteague.

I've been dysautonomic since well before 2000 when I failed the tilt table test and got a dysautonomia diagnosis. If my neurologist's suspicion is correct I've had sleep disordered breathing since near day 1. But I wasn't diagnosed with OSA until two years ago just before I turned 60. As someone who's had only minimal improvement after starting PAP therapy two years ago it's both interesting and a little disheartening for me to read about "low functioning" and "dead" brain cells in Dr. Park's article. At least further damage can be prevented by faithful use of the machine.

Very interesting article; I've often wondered if there could be a level of brain damage with OSA... and since my own diagnosis in January, I've come to realize that many people who die in their sleep might have had untreated OSA. My mother, who had some kind of dementia, died in her sleep at her care facility... she snored, but was never, to my knowledge, diagnosed or even tested for apnea.

Very interesting. I have seen MRI's pictures somewhere on internet in the past, that was the reason why I stopped refusing to get a CPAP. After that I was ready for my machine.

Of all the mental faculties that improved since going on cpap,
I'm still waiting for restoration of my ambition--oh, wait--I never had any.

Thanks for posting kteague. Very interesting article. I may even print it out to give to some people in futile hope they will understand what untreated OSA can do to you
