AHI - what does it mean

Post by Pulpracer » Mon Oct 13, 2014 2:53 pm

Hi all, so I'm aware of the definitions of AHI but can someone look at this latest graph and tell me what it all actually means in terms of when I'm breathing or not during sleep? I can post more info if needed. Thanks!

This particular graph is a per hour graph. Pretty much meaningless without the other graphs to go along with it except it shows more events in the last hours of the night. The usual suspects when we see graphs where the AHI isn't so bad for most of the night and gets a bit ugly later in the night or wee hours of the morning is either supine sleeping or REM stage sleep or both.
The wee hours of the morning right before we wake up also happens to be when we are more apt to have more frequent REM stages and have them last longer.
Correlation with sleep study results might be needed to figure out with any certainty the cause....

Final determination as to what to do would involve figuring out exactly what kind of apnea events is spiking on this graph......can't tell anything from this single graph.
We would suspect insufficient pressure given that the rest of the night things look decent enough and while it wouldn't be impossible for all that AHI to be central...it would be unlikely unless you were awake during this period of time.

So...this particular graph isn't really horribly useful and why I turn it off and don't even bother looking at it. I can look at the events graph and get the same idea and know what kind of events they are...which is more important than just a number of events that we don't know what they are.

Oh..the machine doesn't know if you are awake or not...and it can and will flag awake breathing irregularities by mistake.

Without looking at the "whole picture" it's hard to interpret just one little snippet of the data.

It's somewhat obvious that your therapy is ineffective for some reason......we just don't know that reason is.

We have no idea what your pressure settings are, your sleep position, leak rates, snore indexes, or anything else.

Is that just one night or do the rest of your reports look like that?

Are you SURE you don't mean "the least helpful"?

could be... could be... I usually just turn it off, I've never seen any use in it.
