Can someone help? New to CPAP machine

Post by Jazzicat » Sat Oct 11, 2014 9:34 pm

I have been on my CPAP machine for 22 days. I have been very compliant, though getting used to this infernal machine has been tough. My question is; how do I know if I am doing well or not? Every night I have a happy face on mask seal and humidifier. My pressure is 9, my leak is 13L/min, my AHI (apparently an average because my nightly AHI changes) is 6.3 total AI is 5.8 and central AI is 2.4. Average usage is 7.6 hours per night. I know that a few times I must have been mouth breathing because I wake up with my entire mouth stuck together because it is so dry, but I don't think this is every night. So are these numbers ok for a new user?

Your AI number over 5 is a little higher than we would like to see but not horribly high.
Do you have the software where you can see how the night went or are you getting these numbers of the machine's LCD screen. If it's off the LCD screen that 13 L/min leak number is what we call a 95% leak number which just means for 95% of the night you were at or below that number...5 % of the night you were above that number. We don't know how high but likely not horribly high and 5 % of the night isn't all that bad...for Mr Smiley face to turn to Mr Frowny face on the machine you would need leaks over 24 L/min for at least 30% of the night. If your 95% number is only 13...then it's doubtful that excessive leaks are much of a problem...and if you are mouth breathing some...it isn't very long or much or that 95% number would be a lot higher. Dry mouth usually indicates some mouth breathing but it doesn't take very much mouth breathing to dry the mouth out.

If you don't know about the software check out the links in my signature line.
The AI is a bit high but not horribly high.

How are you sleeping? Well or with a lot of wake ups? How are you feeling in general during the day?
We go by how a person feels as much as we go by AHI numbers.
If you aren't sleeping well and aren't feeling so great then maybe improving that AHI might be something to consider.
