Winter is approaching and I was wondering if there were any specific instructions or cautions regarding humidity settings for the on the Respironics System One Heated Humidifier with heated tubing. I know that humidification seems to be very personal and can vary, but is there a good "starting" setting to try first?
For my first month with the machine with the "heated humidifier (but not the heated tubing) I have used minimal humidification at a setting of 2 with success., but it's still summertime.
My home has a central humidifier which keeps my bedroom area at a fairly constant humidity in the mid 40 to 50% range, and my room temperature is on the warm side (lower 70's F.) during the winter.
Thanks,
Paul

Re: System One Heated Humidifier Tubing
With your rather warm 70 degree bedroom temperature you may not even need or want the heated hose.
A setting of 2 without the heated hose is really a relatively low setting and if your nose is happy with it (and it will let you know if it isn't) then you may not need more and the 2 main reasons for heated hose are
1...ability to have more humidity delivered if your nose wants it
2...the ability to ward off rain out at any humidifier setting and the rain out happens because the cooler air in the bedroom causes the air in the hose to cool to the point of releasing the moisture.
If it doesn't cool down it may not release the moisture.
If you want to use the heated hose because the air going to your nose feels too cool (I call it ice cube nose) and not increase the humidity delivered you could use the setting of 1 (which is 70% or the lowest available when the heated hose is used) for humidity delivery (available only in the clinical setup menu if heated hose is used) and adjust the temperature independently.
See what it says here

Remember that you need not only the heated hose but the special lid and special 80 watt power supply to be able to have access to the settings available to heated hose users. It takes more than just hooking up the heated hose.
Also...that 70% humidity is likely more than what you are using now...all depends on your ambient room humidity. How much more I don't know.
If you have everything you need to utilize the heated hose capabilities...if I were in your shoes and wanted to use the heated hose...given that you have been happy with setting of 2...I would try setting of 1 and maybe setting of 2 for air temp setting..see that link above for how the temp works with starting room temp.

Re: System One Heated Humidifier Tubing
Puggsy,
I have the proper power supply, tubing, etc. Just have not used it as the original machine I received was a "heated humidifier" only (no heated tubing). I ordered and installed the conversion kit to make it a "heated tube".
As usual, I knew I could count on your expertise....
Thanks so much,
Paul

Re: System One Heated Humidifier Tubing
Also, don't forget, we're talking relative humidity here, not absolute, so it is influenced by both both ambient environmental temperature and humidity. Further to that, the higher the temp setting you use (the setting goes from 1-5), the more humidity the air will hold in relative terms. As such, 70% humidity at a setting of 1 is vastly different from a setting of 70% humidity at a setting of 5 in terms of the absolute amount of water distributed in a given volume of air.
