have I got sleep apnea?

Post by millie92 » Sat Oct 04, 2014 2:51 pm

So I've always been a tired person...as in no matter how much I sleep, im tired...as a child my mother had me tested for anaemia ..then again at 17 I spoke to my doctor and had a blood test to see if I had a deficiency....nothing...now it's getting worse and it's really getting me down...I have a one year old and he wakes me up every morning ..and I can't get up...I lie there awake listening to him cry and I physically can't drag myself out of bed...I love my son im a good mother but I can't get up for at least half an hour ..it's impossible. Then two hours after he gets up he goes down for a nap and I have to too im just so tired...then the same thing happens again when he wakes up....im such a house proud person but I can't eep my house clean...I will sit on the sofa think 'right im going to scrub the house today' then I will just sit there staring into space..everything is such an effort...I don't know what to do.. I also snore 'like a chainsaw' apparently...does this sound like sleep apnea? Should I speak to my doctor? The strange thing is sometimes when I go to bed I can't get to sleep...my mind is working overtime but my body won't cooperate...im nearly 22...could I have sleep apnea? Or a different disorder? Im scared of going to my gp and they don't take me seriously...

You must talk to your doctor - there are very many reasons, especially postpartum, that could account for your experience and we cannot diagnose you from here no matter what (and if someone tries to, ignore them!).

Thanks for your reply...I will drag myself to the open surgery Monday...In a twisted way I hope their is something wrong as the alternative is im really really lazy.......im becoming a recluse it's ridiculous...even the simple tasks like going shopping are so daunting ...im not depressed at all...if anything I am always annoyingly optimistic...but I just feel like I haven't slept in days...every day...

I second what Julie has said....go see a doctor.
Yes, some of your symptoms could be related to sleep apnea but they can also be related to any number of other causes...
Especially since you have reported having a lot of fatigue even when in your teens.
Start with a good in depth physical and work up with labs from your doctor.
Have the doctor make sure to test thyroid levels and Vitamin D levels along with any other routine labs he/she might do as part of a general work up. The thyroid test is fairly common but testing Vitamin D levels is not common.

I do understand how you actually wish you did have sleep apnea because then you have a name and face to blame your problems on ....and a known way to try to fix things.
You may or may not have sleep apnea...Impossible to know with out a sleep study but talk all this over with your doctor...start with a good physical. It wouldn't be impossible for there to be more than one problem going on.

Learn the difference between excess drowsiness/need to nap...and fatigue. They aren't necessarily the same thing but people do often use the terms interchangeably and it isn't impossible to have one or the other or even both from any number of causes.

To evaluate the sleepiness side of things...take the Epworth sleep test and see how you rate. Now it's a sleepy test and not fatigue test.
We can be horribly fatigued and not sleepy at all.

Snoring "like a chainsaw" does raise a red flag in combination with your other longstanding symptoms, so do ask your doc to look into the possibility of sleep apnea when you see your doctor. It is true that often young people, women, and slender people are assumed not to have sleep apnea and so are not given a sleep study even when they report suspicious symptoms, and may suffer for years as a result.

The Epworth sleepiness scale that Pugsy linked to is widely used and accepted in the sleep medicine field, so definitely fill it out and bring it with you to your appointment.

And please do keep us posted.
