When my insomnia was at it's worse I had to take medication to help me fall asleep.
Bedtime routine is very important. Cut the caffeine by lunchtime. Take a warm bath. Go to bed the same time everynight. It will be tough at first. If you don't fall asleep get up have a glass of milk, then go back to bed. No TV watching in bed. I got myself new bedding and pillows.
Now I don't need to take anything and I can fall asleep fairly quickly.
It is hard not to focus on the trouble falling asleep. Get some relaxation tapes. Even had my husband dreaming about frogs and toads!
Good luck.

And sometimes if your phase is extremely delayed, it can be easier to push on through and stay up until the next evening, when you should be tired enough to sleep at a normal (for others) hour. And then melatonin 2-3 hours before your target bedtime is supposed to help to acclimatize to the new schedule.

"The night time stretches you...." THis is from I think the play "Our Town" by Thorton Wilder it is a great monologue, and I always identified with it...still do. Although I am working on my sleep patterns, so I do miss the night.

I realized in my last 2 yrs on CPAP that my avoidance of sleep is long ingrained...and I often had pushed thru to the second wind and sometimes up til 4 or 5 am and them just grab 2 hours until the rest of the house got up. I came to see that I AM tired by at least 10 or 10:30pm consistently, and if I push thru the yawns, I'll miss the easier entry into sleep. Sleep had come to be associated with waking up feeling like crap....... What ever I needed to do could NOT wait til morning.....because I would be in no shape to do anything....even after "waking up" for a few hours.

So I miss the night time, and have to be vigiliant on keeping the pattern I am developing. I am also using light therapy for 30 minutes every morning.... and I am getting a payoff of a growing trend of longer sleep hours and incrementially better mental functioning earlier in the day.....or really at all!!

So, your sleep time may be more of a function of "life preserving" habit than you realize.....

Hope you have success optimizing your sleep, functioning, and the best version of schedule for work and relationships that you can achieve......

It's that time. A nice long day of sleep today. Night all.

I can't tell you how much this article has helped me. I have always been a night owl, but lately I thought I was loosing my ever-loving mind. Whereas before I would frequently stay up all hours of the night 'till say one or two if I wasn't out partying, but recently it has been every single night up till four or five am and getting up between five and seven am for work. It has definitely been affecting me. I think most importantly, I know now that I am not crazy and I am not alone. I will figure this out somehow.
