help a newbie out please!

Post by robwcormack » Fri Jul 11, 2014 11:41 am

Forgive me if I've missed something in my searching prior to posting this, but I just purchased a used resmed s9 autoset from an individual off of CL. It only had 13.6 hrs on it and came with 4 climateline hoses, 2 mirage quattro masks (which are Large and I can't use them because I need medium) one of which was used twice and one never used, 2 extra cushions, 10 resmed gecko nasal pads, 10 fine filters, h5i with regular tub and extra dishwasher safe tub, oxygen hoses connectors and misc pieces (which I don't need), and a couple other odds and ends. Got it for $400 so I figured it was probably a good deal.

Anyway, it had been sitting in a box in a closet for 6-8 months and I noticed it did not have a filter on it when I got it out of the box. So I'm afraid it probably has dust inside the fan from sitting. Maybe I'm being ridiculous, but I'm wondering if I should try to blow some canned air in there maybe with vaccuum on the outlet to remove any dust inside? I'm new to this whole thing and am going for my follow up sleep study Tuesday where they will put me on the machine and do whatever they do. I'm hoping to take this machine I bought with me and have them set it up before I leave to prevent having to go back again and probably pay another co-pay to do that.

Thank you all for your wealth of knowledge and sharing your experience. It has been most helpful as this is a bit nerve racking having to do all this. Hate my wife is going to have to be sleeping with Darth Vader now, but hopefully life will be better.

Unless you buried it in the backyard or something extream like that was done, it's ok. Remove the HH and run it a few minutes, then put the filters back in correctly. The canned air solution sounds good, but it could overspeed the motor, it becomes a generator, the circuit may not like it. Jim

Thanks for the reply Jim. You think even with the unit unplugged it could mess with circuitry?

I like your ideas to take it to the sleep study lab for them to set it up AFTER your sleep study. S9 Autoset in the APAP mode is contra indicated to those who suffer from: Central Sleep Apnea Syndrome; COPD; Heart problems, and weak lungs.
What is canned air? I would just let it run for 10 minutes after you place the filter. IMO, except the humidifier you could discard all the rest.

In my first sleep study the results said i didn't have any actual apneas but had 46 hypopneas which gave an HI of 15.6. I slept the entire time of the sleep study on my back which is EXTREMELY rare for me as I usually sleep on my side, but it's tough to do much with 500 wires on you. Not really sure how badly I need this thing, but the doc seems set that I do. Granted I'm a big boy. 6'0" and 325 lbs. I'm tired during the day though pretty regularly.

You need to test lying on your side and not your back... you may have only 'positional' apnea depending on other factors and should get a copy (yours by law) of the full sleep study results - not just the summary. You should also ask for a thyroid check and low T test - not everything is caused by OSA, though in your case it might be.
