New CPAP machine suggestions?

Post by RJPmom » Wed Jul 09, 2014 1:42 pm

I'm going to get a new CPAP machine next week after using a Phillips Resprionics C-Flex System One for several years. I've liked the machine a great deal except for one glaring issue: the loud beep when you turn it off or on. It wakes my husband up, so if I get up during the night or before him in the morning, I disturb his sleep. I've got moderate obstructive apnea and will use a setting of 10cm/pressure with a nasal pillow mask, if that helps any. Any suggestions for a good machine with humidifier that is totally silent would be greatly appreciated!

the newer philips respironics offer a 'silent' mode.

the resmed s9 machines don't beep unless you turn on a mask alert feature available in some of them.

I have three newer PR system One 760Ps and none of them have ever beeped, peeped or anything when powering on or off. There may be a setting to enable or disable this feature but if so, I've never noticed it.

Familiarity means a lot in the middle of the night. If you like your current PR machine you might want to stick with that brand.

I think old dude is right on the money on this. I love my ResMed (well, I'd love using not having to use a machine even more, but...) and can't see switching to a Respironics - that doesn't mean my machine is better, it is just the one I am used to and I know it works for me. I'd go for a newer full featured version of the Respironics if I were you.

As others have pointed out: The new Series 60 System One's have a silent mode. And it's truly silent. No beeping when the machine is turned On and Off.

That's one of two things the I'm jealous about on my hubby's Series 60 machine. My Series 50 beeps every time I turn it on and off, which is a lot. Fortunately for me, the beeps don't bother hubby too much. The other thing I envy is the 1-night AHI and Leak numbers available on the LCD; mine only give 7 and 30 day summary numbers.

look for 'silent mode' in the setup menu can't remember if it's in the plain or clinician menu.

It's in hubby's patient setup menu.

But like anything, I suppose the tech can "lock" the patient out of this if they are evil.

I liked my S9 Autoset much better than my PRS1 DS960TS.
The S9 was a much quieter machine and I don't remember beeps.
My 960 is so loud it was difficult for me to fall asleep the first week or so. I am getting used to it but I still don't like the way it amplifies my breathing apparently all night long.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll see about the series 60 version of my old machine.

robysue, if it makes you feel any better while the leak, AHI and PB numbers are pretty accurate on the new 60 series machines (comparing to SH and EB), the session duration is usually off just enough to make me crazy. Not a whole lot, but usually 6 to 12 minutes off-and it always "cheats" you out of those minutes instead of the other way around. I say 6 to 12 because the machine seems to only deal in increments of 6 minutes and the reports numbers that are divisible by 6. Kinda strange.

And why does that bother me? I have a minimum goal of six hours per night and it bugs me if I miss it by a couple of minutes. OCD is a terrible thing to waste...
