Centrals and Pain Meds

Post by CRM » Wed Jul 02, 2014 12:30 pm

Sorry for the duplicate post but wanted to make sure my question caught the eye of those of you with interest and expertise in central events (or at least the scoring of them).
This data is from Sunday night. Have been running about 3-6AHI pretty nicely and then this. I've been having an unusually bad flare up (RA) and allowed myself more codeine than usual on Sunday. Could that influence these results?
Thanks again!Image

Opiates can definitely induce centrals. But it is also possible that your RA was affecting your sleep and that all these things that are being scored as centrals are irregular breathing patterns that are occurring when you are awake or partially awake. You'll see such things referred to as SWJ (Sleep-Wake Junk) around here, and they are generally not considered cause for alarm.

Codeine will relax your throat muscles and could lead to worse apnea. Opiates, in general, depress respiration which could also add to non-obstructive apneas. So, yes, codeine can increase both OA's and CA's. And, as Latinist pointed out, the pain may have made you more restless and the reported apneas may have actually been recorded due to your waking behavior.

Sorry, naming error. I meant hydrocodone and oxycodone. Not codeine.

Who said he had Central Sleep Apnea Syndrome? He had one night with a bunch of things the S9 identified as clear-airway apnea. Again, jumping to unwarranted conclusions.

So why are you jumping to the conclusion that this guy has Central Sleep Apnea Syndrome just because his home xPAP device detected a bunch of clear airway events on ONE NIGHT when we know that the guy is taking a medication know to induce centrals AND was in a lot of pain? That's ridiculous.

CRM,

I would keep an eye on your data regularly & note if this happens again when you've taken extra pain meds. Also if you begin seeing several days like this THEN I would want to get an opinion from RobySue or Pugsy. It probably is SWJ, but I would keep an eye on it to be safe.
