More Questions

Post by Zeecat » Tue Jun 17, 2014 9:14 am

Hi All,

I've been reading posts and I wish I had more advice to offer instead of just asking questions!

I'm trying nasal pillows tonight for the first time. Fed-ex just dropped of the Respironics Nuance Pro. Does anyone have any experience with this model and/or recommendations to either make it work or for "better" ones?

Thanks!

Is this your first nasal pillow mask or have you tried other nasal pillow masks?
The Nuance is actually a pretty nice little mask. A little too much headgear to suit my own personal preferences but it's a nice little mask. If this is your first time with a nasal pillow mask then my main advice would be to don't over tighten those straps. People tend to do that and get a sore nose or the pillows can't inflate and they feel like they are suffocating from lack of air movement.
Watch the fitting videos. Don't be afraid to let the nasal pillows rest gently against the nostrils and I mean GENTLY.

If this is your first nasal pillow mask...get some Lansinoh lanolin ointment and apply just a tiny bit to the nostrils at bedtime. It will help with any minor discomfort that the nostrils might have when first using a nasal pillow mask.
Anything above minor discomfort means something is wrong with the fitting...either nasal pillow the wrong size or the straps too tight. When you first put the mask on go look in the mirror and if the first thing that pops into your head is "piggy nose" then the straps are too tight and most often the top strap.

Personally I like a couple of other nasal pillow masks better than the Nuance but that's my own personal preference in terms of headgear and not the nasal pillows themselves. I liked it well enough to keep it when I tried it and that speaks volumes when I keep a mask for "maybe using later". If I don't like it I don't keep it.
The new ResMed AirFit P10 nasal pillow mask might be something to consider if you don't like the Nuance for some reason. The P10 headgear is extremely minimal and pretty much disappears and the vent noise is pretty much non existent. Not that the Nuance is loud but it is a bit noisier than the P10...so if vent noise is something that bugs you then you might look at the P10.
