Beginner success!!

Post by jshuler43 » Thu Jun 12, 2014 7:19 am

My adult son was recently diagnosed with sleep apnea and given a prescription for a Respironics Auto SV BiPAP. I was actually surprised that he followed through and got his machine and actually used it. He is fairly young and I just thought that would be something he would never do. Especially since his wife wasn't that keen on him getting it.

Well, the first night he used it, he got 8 straight hours of sleep and woke up with more energy than usual. His wife said that the machine was actually quiet (like white noise) and much better than his snoring. So there is great hope that he will use the machine and will actually have a much better quality of life.

I am curious though. He had a heart rate of 180 while sleeping during his testing. Is there any way that can be monitored? Also, his oxygen was somewhat low, and he had a total of 2 minutes of deep sleep (REM & level 3) during his testing. Is there some way that can be looked at? The tech person did not know if there was any way my son could look at his sleep info without bringing the machine in and downloading it to their computers.

Thanks! So thrilled my son and his wife are happy with such a major change in their lives.

Which model machine? Number is on the bottom of the blower unit. A 3 digit number with maybe DS or REF in front of the 3 digits.
Hopefully 950 or 960 because there is software available so the results can be seen by the patient.
SleepyHead now works with either of those models.

Can't see REM sleep at all. The machine has no way to know if a person is even awake or sleep much less sleep stages.

Oxygen levels and pulse rate can be easily monitored with an overnight recording pulse oximeter.

The CMS 50D Plus is the minimum pulse oximeter that records overnight data. You can get fancier models for more money.

Pugsy, on that link 1 one those machines say that you are not able to use with sleapyhead software, does that mean 1 of them is?

The 950 and 960 are both compatible with SleepyHead now. In the past the 960 was not compatible but will now work with SleepyHead version 0.9.5 testing or 0.9.6 testing versions.

I am trying to fix my SleepyHead instructions as I have time to update all the new information regarding compatibility but I may have missed one (or more than one ).
What link are you talking about? One of mine? Let me know which one and I will fix it.

Now there is an older Respironics ASV machine that won't work with SleepyHead because it uses a smart card. I would hope that DMEs wouldn't be supplying that model machine now as the 950 is even now discontinued and the smart card machine is even older than the 950. The 960 is the latest Respironics System One ASV machine.

Yes, I see that now about the one model not being compatible with SleepyHead...and yes, that means the others are compatible...some easier than others though.
