New bipap machine not stopping snoring

Post by hgard » Fri Jun 06, 2014 6:01 am

I'm new to this great community. I bought a used Respironics DS700 auto bipap and used it for the first time last night. My setting is 5/10 (or 10/5, the bigger pressure is on inhale). My wife woke me up asking me to turn over because I was snoring constantly. Is it possible to snore on both inhale and exhale, or only on inhale? Also, I think I found a video showing how to change the settings on my machine, but am wondering how to get to the correct setting that stops my snoring and is correct for me? Any advice would be most appreciated. Many thanks.

Then you are self-titrating with a bipap?
If you add "bipap" to your title, you will get someone who knows something about it.

Others will come along shortly I'm sure who know much more about this than I do, but my experience is that my 760P BiPap mitigates my snoring substantially but does not completely eliminate it. Some nights I have none, or almost none, but other nights there is some. Perhaps I should be more concerned, but what I try to do is to correlate it to other events such as RERAs, PB, etc. and if I see a correlation then I tend to worry more.

My pressures are currently 11/7, not all that different from yours. But my original prescription was 17/13, and every time I've lowered my pressures all of my metrics have improved-including my snoring.

FWIW it seems to me that there is a direct relationship between how well (deeply) I slept on a given night and how much I may have snored.

M series BIPap Auto?
It is a full data machine in terms of what it gathered back when it was the latest and greatest.
Does it have a smart card in the back of the machine? If so you can use that smart card and a special card reader to use the software available and see what's happening.

There is some limited data available on the LCD screen of the machine. AHI and leak and pressure averages for the last 7/30 days.. There is a way to make it show a single night by erasing all old data prior to going to bed.

Snoring is on of the items shown on the software reports...
Snoring could be an indication that the pressure settings are not quite optimal.

Most likely the EPAP ....is too low.
Are you using it in Auto mode or fixed bilevel mode? with those 5/10 settings...can it go above 10?

To do it optimally...you need a smart card, the DT 3500 Infineer Card reader and the software.
I can help with the software...the smart card is around $12 and I know a place to get the DT3500 for $40.
I am familiar with the M series machines...My first machine was an M series machine.
Software I can help with is free.

How did you get to the pressures you are using?
Is there a sleep study hovering in the background or are you doing the whole thing on your own?

Snoring is an indication of a partial collapse of the airway. This happens if the pressures are too low to keep the airway completely open. It also indicates that at least part of your problem is obstructive in nature.

You can do the self-titrating thing but it is better to have the guidance of a sleep doctor.
With that machine, you will need to get a "smart card" for recording your data if you don't already have one that came with the machine and a "smart card" reader so you can upload your data to your computer. Then you can see the frequency of breathing difficulties that you are experiencing.

To get the best advice, modify your subject line to include "M series Auto BiPap" so that folks with expertise in the M series can notice and respond.

I can help with the M Series machine stuff and the BiPap stuff...I have used both.
I also know about the Card readers and can get you the software needed....SleepyHead won't work unfortunately.

I need to know exact mode of operation and if in auto mode there's more to the settings than 5/10.
Are you self diagnosing and self titrating or have you some history with sleep doc and sleep lab? If so, what has been done?

Hope I'm replying to this the right way. Thanks for the info. I've bumped up my inhale and exhale pressures up by 1 each, and I think it's helping (wife says I'm still snoring a little, so I'll bump it up a little more). Please do send me the place to get the reader. my email is hgard2@gmail.com

Thanks all who have responded. This is very helpful. FYI, I had a sleep study done several years ago but can't afford to do another one, so I'm trying to adjust pressures a little at a time. I've bumped it up by 1 each for both inhale/exhale, and that's helped some, but wife says I still snore a little, so I'll bump both up by another half point. I'm looking into getting the Smart Card and reader. The free software seems like a great way to go. To reply directly to me, my email is hgard2@gmail.com Thanks again!
