DeVilbiss loudness

Post by JLtheDrone » Thu May 29, 2014 6:22 pm

I am a newbie to cpap therapy. The DME put me on a DeVilbiss intellipap machine. It is significantly louder than my husband's Respironics machine, especially on the inhale. I tried moving the machine so it is a little lower than the bed so the sound wasn't right next to my ear. I changed the "rounding" settings. It is still loud enough to annoy me and keep me from falling asleep. I have only been on it three nights. Just wondering if anyone else has my machine and if you have any suggestions for me.

Are you absolutely sure the machine (and not the mask) is the problem? It's really not a noisy machine so I can only think something's wrong.

Try your husband's machine briefly to see if you still hear a lot of inhale noise with it.
Sometimes the noise we hear on inhale is more conductive in nature (coming through the hose) than it is from the machine.
If you still hear a lot of noise on inhale with his machine...it may be conductive noise and maybe a hose cozy might help.
If you don't hear it...then maybe it is just a noisier machine and maybe see if DME will get you a machine like your husbands.

The machine is also lighter than others, and you might try putting it on top of an old foam/rubber mouse pad to dampen things if there's any chance of it's skittering around a bit on a shiny surface (mine's on an opaque wooden one so doesn't move, but it doesn't take much to do it if I push on the hose near the machine).

I can try the mouse pad thing but it really is not a vibration noise. I will try my mask with my husband's machine. I have nasal pillows and he has a full face mask so there can be some difference in noise there. Thanks for your support.

Success! There was, in fact, something wrong. My husband figured out that the gasket for the humidifier was not seating right. Now it's quiet as could be and I am looking forward to decent sleep tonight. If it gets loud again we'll know what the problem is.

Good. Glad that little worry is off the table.
I thought it odd that it would be horribly loud. The Devilbiss machines are normally loved by all the people that use them and report that they are nearly silent.
Though it wouldn't be impossible to have a lemon or have something else have been a potential culprit.

When you are dying to get to sleep, it is so hard to think of everything that could go wrong.
Props to your hubby!
