Hi there,
I am posting on behalf of my sister. She has just started using a cpap machine (i have to find out which one) but her problem is she is a quadraplegic and is looking for a way to put it on and take of herself. Her level of injury (C5-6) prevents her from using her hands, however she doesnt always have someone with her before she goes to sleep. Any help would be much appreciated.

Re: adjusting cpap for quadraplegic use
As if she didn't have enough to deal with! Well, we certainly would love to help however we can - can you tell us how much, if any, control or devices, etc. she does have? Without knowing, it's a bit hard to envision what's what. Have you been in touch with any orgs, assocs, etc. for quads that might have some ideas, because I'm sure she's not alone in needing Cpap... and it's important to get the fit just right, and the last little tweak of the mask once it's on and she's ready to sleep... I find myself jiggling it up and down by tiny degrees every night, and that's after 10 yrs on the thing!
There is also a very new procedure out which implants tiny electrodes to stimulate phrenic and/or other nerves, etc. to 'breathe' when the machine tells them to (I'm NOT explaining it well here), but it's something we've begun talking about because many of us would like not to have to wear masks either. Maybe your sister's neurologist could look into that for her.
