Why would I have a lot more apnea events with 1 mask?

Post by Nashpap » Thu May 22, 2014 11:26 pm

I downloaded Sleepyhead software and reviewed my data. I learned that my apnea events were 0-5 and a one-time rate of 9 from November-mid April (using a nose mask - Wisp and Eson). (They were at 7 an hour at my initial sleep study.) Since I've used the Simplus full face mask, it immediately increased my apnea events dramatically. My highest rate was 176!!! There was a slight increase in leakage too. So why would a full face mask do this? Fit? Leaks? I went back to my Eson mask just to be sure it was related to the new mask and nothing else and the events went back down.

I don't know how to attach a picture of the Sleepyhead results like other people have. Would that help answer this question?

Full face masks sometimes put pressure on your jaw and move it back slightly.
For some folks, this causes an increase in obstructive events.
In that case, the "cure" is to go back to the nasal type mask or to increase the pressure just a little bit when using the FFM.
If your machine provides detailed data, look and see if the increase is in obstructive events or not.
Sometimes the increase is from central events and then the "cure" is a change in machine type.
BTW "cure" refers to a more effective treatment regimen and not a medical cure.

The numbers I gave were total number of obstructive apnea events (under the daily events tab) not the AHI. Of course the AHI went up dramatically as well.

How to post images of detailed report graphs is discussed in this thread with examples.
