Dentist said Biotene won't help!

Post by dinycat » Fri May 02, 2014 7:55 pm

Yesterday at my check up, I asked the dentist about dry mouth leading to cavities, and told him I was concerned because of CPAP use. (I can't tolerate the humidifier because of emphysema.)

He told me that Biotene and its ilk won't do a thing to help prevent cavities, and that the best thing I could do is rub Vaseline on my gums before sleep.

Yup, Vaseline.

I don't think I could stomach that, so I'm going to call Monday and ask if olive oil will work just as well. You know, with my bread and wine?

DentaGel 1.1% at night is what my dentist prescribes for this problem.

Ack! Petro chemical in your mouth every night?
If I was going to use oil I'd probably go with coconut oil -- I'm not well read on coconut oil but it seems to have some antibacterial properties. I'd be interested in what your dentist has to say about the oils.

I would reconsider patronizing a dentist who advocates Vaseline in your mouth. Ick!
