Hey Good Self-treating Buddies!

Post by So Well » Fri May 02, 2014 12:11 pm

Excited about getting home this weekend and sitting here in the airport early for my flight. Thought about you guys when I read this. And how you diagnose yourself, titrate your pressure and do all the troubleshooting and problem solving.

This guy also did something for himself without professional medical help. I like people that take initiative and take care of themselves.

Thanks for all you did for me in the past and all the best to each of you "unusual sorts of persons"!
Joint Aspiration and the YouTube Generation

A 45-year-old man presented with pronounced swelling of the right knee, and was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis, and 340 mL of fluid was drained in the clinic, according to Esther Chan, MBBS, of Sunderland Royal Hospital.

The patient's mother was a retired nurse, and various types of medical equipment were available in the home.

"The next time he came to the clinic, he rather proudly told us that on three occasions he had aspirated his own knee, following a YouTube demonstration of "draining my own knee."

"We investigated this and found 36,100 hits, with six patients draining their knees and two aspirating their elbows," Chan said.

The main concern with a practice such as this was the possibility of infection and ensuing joint damage, but thus far this patient hasn't experienced any harm.

"However, we've advised him that it would be better if he came to the clinic for joint aspiration, even though he was pleased at being able to care for himself," she noted.

The leader of the poster tour, Nick Shenker, BMBCh, PhD, of Cambridge University, commented, "He sounds like an unusual sort of person."

I don't know about that self draining procedure of a swollen knee. I don't think I'd try it. However, concerning the CPAP patient/sleep doctor relationship, it doesn't have to be all or nothing (at least under ideal circumstances). I make suggestions or requests to my sleep doctor and sometimes he doesn't like them but will give me reasons why - it's up to me to determine if I proceed or not, plus I accept the consequences. Sometimes he is fine with them and signs off on my 'experiments'. It's important, I think, to have objective data in the form of reports and charts to show your medical team, that way they can quantify results (and cover their asses). The results all being very scientific and whatnot.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

My father saved several cows suffering from "bloat", he released the trapped air from the paunch,
using a pocket knife and a piece of tubing. The vet said he "done good".
Makes you wonder if there is any way to install a emergency anti-aerophagia valve we can tap at home.

My husband says God already gave every person one, but women don't like to use theirs.

I used to use mine profusely; but then my co-workers took up a petition . . .

For about a month, when starting CPAPing, I was getting my pressure build-up relieved out of BOTH ends. Fortunately It was in the morning when my wife was typically out to the gym or shopping (the kids were grown and out of the house). That eventually went away, so I was no longer a pariah in my own house.
