Not breathing properly when you are awake
Not breathing properly when you are awake
While my sleep apnea is under control at night...I am noticing what seems to be I forget to breathe during the day. I usually notice this in the afternoon, or when I sit for long meetings...then I yawn or have a quick catch up gasp. Has anyone else had this?

Re: Not breathing properly when you are awake
I very much remember this when I first started to use CPAP. It seemed to go away in a few months of use of CPAP.LisaSch wrote:While my sleep apnea is under control at night...I am noticing what seems to be I forget to breathe during the day. I am suspicious that "exercising your ventilatory system" with some light to moderate aerobic exercise and perhaps a bit of resistance training may well move the process along a bit faster.
As well many have noted that the respiratory control system likes vitamin D3 levels above 50 (but lower than 80). Check out "The Vitamin D Council" for details as to the proper assay.

Re: Not breathing properly when you are awake
I vaguely remember an article recently about people "forgetting" to breath while at their computers.
This isn't the specific article (and a quick scan makes me skeptical of the author) but it was the first related item that google returned and I'm feeling lazy...

Re: Not breathing properly when you are awake
You probably had this long ago but now that you are more aware of the effect of breathing you notice it more often. Awake breathing is really ragged for many people. You use your breathe the help you move and do things, you hold your breath when you don't understand, feel uncertain or afraid, you breath very swallow when you are concentrating and deep when angry.LisaSch wrote:While my sleep apnea is under control at night...I am noticing what seems to be I forget to breathe during the day. This is how I figured out i had complex apnea even before my sleep study.LisaSch wrote:While my sleep apnea is under control at night...I am noticing what seems to be I forget to breathe during the day. My intervals of forgetting to breathe were as long as 30-45 seconds, much longer than breath holding because of concentrating on something external.
Do you have any estimate of how long these lapses last?

Yes, has been happening since I was a child. I became aware of it fully after getting on CPAP. I still do it, but less no that I'm aware.

Yeah I have no idea now long..I just notice it in meetings when I am sitting for a long time. I am just becoming aware of it as more breathing issues...

Re: Not breathing properly when you are awake
I find myself wishing I had my CPAP with me when working. It's like the CPAP has taught us how effectively breathe during the day.

Re: Not breathing properly when you are awake
My breathing while awake used to be very irregular - very long gaps between breaths, gasps, repeated deep sighs. While I still tend to hold my breath, just not as often or as long, most of the obvious irregularity ceased a few months after getting my sleep apnea treatment optimized.

Re: Not breathing properly when you are awake
Both my wife and I noticed that we sometimes stop breathing during the day ... we have both been on cpap for more than 1.5 years ... maybe it is a getting old thing ... we forget others things too!

Re: Not breathing properly when you are awake
I've noticed it on occasion with myself. My husband holds his breath, especially when he's stressed. Sometimes he'll be sitting in bed next to me and I'll notice and have to tell him to breathe because he doesn't even realize he's doing it.
