Reinstalling SleepyHead (without loosing curent data)

IS it possible to reinstall sleeyhead without looding the 2 month data i already have in it somehow?
please someone help

Pretty sure the answer is YES, presumably you are using Windows so if not you need to specify what version you are using and which OS.

Caveat: I am not a SleepyHead expert but I am an expert at Windows and at fooling programs to do what needs doing.

In this case, SleepyHead seems to be a NICE program that won't even require (much) fooling.

When you install the Unstable Build, it asked you where to put your data files. I might not remember where I chose (it defaults to a reasonable location) and just went to look again by pretending to "change it".

How to find your files (which works on Windows but probably works very similar on the other OS choices): File (Menu) -> Change Data Folder

The location was within the
"C:\Users\herbm\Documents\SleepyHeadData-Unstable" directory, where "HerbM" is my Username and yours would likely be there instead.

If you try this don't change it for now, but you can view the location or even copy that (as text) to go find it.

BTW, SleepyHead won't really let you truly cancel this change but if you chose cancel it will RESTART itself with the old location.

My guess (it's a pretty good one but you were warned it is a guess) is that if you just made a faithful copy of this data and then later pointed the "Change Data Folder" at it, or chose it when you started a new version that it would work just fine.

Remember this is a guess and it was done with the UNSTABLE build, so we need a way to prove it.

SleepyHead UNSTABLE also doesn't seem to require a "true" install where it moves a bunch of stuff toe "Programs Files" or similar and maybe it doesn't even change the registry (or it does that without an "install" program.) At least some versions work this way.

You just unzip the UNSTABLE version and run the program from wherever you wish. That's what I did with the "Unstable build".

The unstable build was smart enough (good programming) to allow me to CHOOSE my data file location on first run AND to use the version name in the DEFAULT location, (likely) so that it would be easy to have multiple version installed at the same time (e.g., for testing or because one works better than another for different things).

The unstable version is smart enough to let you INITIALLY SET or later CHANGE the data directory.

So, surprise. The Beta worked differently: It HAS an INSTALLER, and it just defaulted to the same parent directory (C:\Users\herbm\Documents) but used just "SleepyHeadData" as the actual (sub) directory or folder name.

So I am betting if you just shut down SleepyHead and copied everything into that directory again (from where ever you have it saved) then it would be happy.

Might not work. But I warned you.

However, remember you data is still on the SD card unless you have more than fits on the card.

And SleepyHead might just find the data directory when you re-install it and use what is there (likely but untested by me.)

One reasonably safe way to check would be to install the Unstable build, and copy your current data to that SleepyHeadData-Unstable directory or vice versa with the Beta or Release if you are already running the unstable build.

Also not, my guess (I do a lot of that) is that the Release version and the Beta version are using the same directory name (SleepyHeadData in your profile or home directory) and not offering you a choice so you need to be careful mixing those two until it is tested.

Right now, Beta an Unstable are happily running on my machine at the same moment and having no issues (they are using different data directories because I didn't want to confuse them.)

Following is for Windows SleepyHead version. I don't do Macs.

No need to do anything special. SleepyHead stores all the old data in a folder in MyDocuments that is untouched by an uninstall and/or reinstall of SleepyHead.
In fact a special effort has to be made to remove those old files.

Just reinstall SleepyHead and the old stuff will still be in the same folder (if using same version) and SleepyHead will find it. No need to copy anything or move anything.

The folder names for versions that are different aren't the same though.
Version 0.9.3 has a Windows installer in it. This is what I recommend for most people.
Version 0.9.4 is a work in progress and doesn't have the installer in it. Must use the application.exe file to open it. If you don't know what I am talking about..use the version with the Windows installer.
