OT: Nutty weather

While you people are freezing your butts off up in North America down here in Australia my town is expected to reach 110F today and it will continue until Saturday when a cool change is supposed to happen. Perth Hills in Western Australia has a very nasty fire atm approx 40homes lost.

It seems to me that everywhere there are more extremes, either stinking hot or freezing. Not only more, but longer periods of the extremes. Climate change sucks.

+43C eh? That's hot. The hottest it has ever been in Toronto is about 41C, but with a lot of humidity that made it feel like +1,000C.

After the ridiculous -25C (-40C wind chill) weather last week, today's high in Toronto of +7C felt darn near summer-like.

I can't wait for the humidity in my house to increase above Arizona-like dryness so I don't have to re-fill my CPAP reservoir every night. My heating / cooling system automatically drops the humidity down when it is extremely cold outside to avoid condensation on the windows, then brings the humidity back up when it warms up, but it takes 24 to 48 hours for the system to readjust the humidity for the whole house. In the summer I can go three nights without refilling.

Yes our temps went up to +3c today and I had my coat wide open walking the dog. It has been well below freezing since the begin of November here in Edmonton. This was so nice. The dog was so happy without booties and coat.
The weather here has been strange too - we already had the winters worth of snow on the ground by mid December and there is still 4 months to go.

Yesterday I thought one of my parrots was going to die from the heat. I found him on the bottom of the cage minus his tail feathers and acting very dopey. I took him to vet but there was nothing obvious besides the feathers missing. Losing the feathers is strange because there is no way a cat or anything bigger than a sparrow can get to his cage.

I hate heat like this, it just saps the energy from you and its hard to get any sleep. Then there is the bushfire threat, as long as it stays humid we should be ok.

Unfortunately, here in Santa Cruz, California, we're having spring-like warm, dry weather. This is our normal cold, wet season, it doesn't rain in the summer here (Mediterranean climate). So far this has been a record dry winter, we're so far below normal rainfall that it's going to be a really rough summer for having enough water if we don't get more rain. We were working on a desalination plant plan here, but in the infinite wisdom of a very vocal minority of activist "greenies" who are pretty sure that they know what's best for everyone, that's been put off. Apparently they haven't lived here very long...I've lived in this area 40 years now, and a lot of those have been very dry, a few have been very wet. But without a long term view of the climate/weather here, it's hard to understand that we really do need to use desalination to supplement our water needs through these dry dry dry years.

Another case of all of us getting what these know-nothing, supposedly ecologically concerned folks deserve. That's not a kind way to put it, but I'm just a wee bit frustrated at the moment.

None the less, we're not exactly freezing ourselves this winter *smile*, that's what I started out to say. It was in the mid-60's F today, not a cloud in the sky. Sorry about the detour, there.

Funny thing about weather, it changes Mother Nature is in control, science and governments think they have a clue, but all they can do is waste our money, and try to control us, meanwhile we humans try to get by, poorer.

Mother Nature is going to have her way, climate change has been in progress before man and his ignorance crawled into the sunlight.

Every year people supposedly get smarter, but as I see it they just get dumber and lasier. We as a humans can't fix everything, best we can do is make the best of what we have. Jim

Article in the local paper last week about precipitation levels in the West. Apparently data from historical research shows that the the precipitation levels in the 18 and 1900's here in the West was higher than the historical average. Dams were built to capture water for irrigation and urban use based on faulty understanding of history. If we are in fact cycling back to long term average precip levels our reservoirs are not going to ever be full again.

Lightening strikes have caused a heap of fires, some close to home. Not in any immeadiate danger, fingers crossed the volunteer firies and water bombers can get them under control

Today was like the beginning of summer. I bought my kids rain gear at the beginning of winter and they haven't used it once. I've only lived here a handful of years, but am used to a two-week long deluge once a year. Its making me antsy that there's been almost no rain (having grown up in California during drought years).
