Septoplasty 24 hour post op concerns.

Post by Meg.C. » Fri Jan 10, 2014 6:35 pm

Hi, my partner had a septoplasy about 24 hours ago. He bled quite a bit right after the surgery and was nearly kept in for the night. He was discharged 6 hours after the op after having some padding in his nose taken out as he was bleeding after that came out too. I had to sign a form to say I would take care of him as he left, we were told that if any blood went down his throwt when we got home he should call the ENT consultants. When he woke up this morning he told me that he woke up in the night gagging on blood and has had to change his nose bandage about 5 times today with the blood being dark and clotty.

The pain killers hes been given (ibuprofen and parasetemol) are not stopping him being in pain so he also took some naproxin, which Im not sure was a good idea as its a blood thinner. Hes very drowzy still and looks pale altho he has been eating and drinking fine.

The bleeding from his nose has stopped now but its all crusted up with blood and is blocked and very painfull. He did a nasal douch a few hours ago as we were advised by the hospital which helped with the blockage abit but not the pain. He is still spitting up mucusy clotty blood.

Should I ring the ENT consultants? If I shouldnt at what point should I become concerned.

Definitely ring the ENT consultants if you have any concerns. That is what they are paid for.

Good luck to your partner.

Please call the doctor(s) about this -- you should have post op care instructions with the numbers to call. This is not something we can or should offer advice on. I hope all goes well for him.

Sounds like he is doing OK but go ahead and call. What harm could it do to call?

Go ahead and call; a moment of embarrassment beats a lifetime of regret.
