Things I wish someone would invent

Post by lvehko » Fri Jun 23, 2006 9:35 am

So I'm doing OK with the Swift and mouth taping, aside from dealing with taping issues -- no fun ripping that tape off my face in the a.m.

Wondering about the new Hybrid, and I have a suspicion, based on my experience with full-face masks -- it seems like the main problem with them is that they don't accommodate the fact that a person's jaw moves independently of the nose. i.e., you can put the mask on, get a good seal everywhere, but as soon as you lie down, your jaw moves around and you lose the seal. While the Hybrid looks interesting, I'm betting it suffers from the same problem, because the mouth piece is connected statically to the nose piece.

Someone needs to invent a full-face mask where the nose piece and the mouth piece move independently. I was thinking last night that my Swift would work better for me if the hose connection was in the center. Then it occurred to me, if the hose connection was in the center, a mouth piece or even a mouth dam could be connected to the hose as it crossed over the mouth. I'm thinking something like the mouth piece that divers use, where part of it goes into your mouth and the outside part seals over the lips.

Still lots of issues with this, like how to make sure the mouth piece seals, etc., but someone with some knowledge could certainly make it work... and become a millionaire!

Secondly, I've been surfing to try and find something, anything, that will work as a mouth dam, and I found this thing:

http://www.somni.com/

It's marketed as a snore guard, which it apparently didn't work so well for, as the website appears to be out of business, but it might work as a mouth dam to prevent mouth breathing for cpap users. The principle I'm thinking about here is the same as when you were a kid and stuck an orange slice into your mouth to make orange teeth. All the other things I've found of this type are re-positioning type things -- what we need is something that simply blocks the mouth. Again, a simple, easy to produce item that could make somebody very rich.

Take it away, inventors!

Why not put a 'Y' connector in your hose. Then connect one leg of the 'Y' to an over-the-head interface (Adam Circuit, CL2, etc). Next put an Oracle HC452 in your mouth, and connect it to the other leg of the 'Y'...I think it may work. Best of all, the mouth interface would be separate from the nasal interface..

Whoa -- does that thing fit IN your mouth, or over the top? If it fits in the mouth, it could work as a dental dam, after plugging up the holes. Now, if only it weren't 85 bucks...

It fits in and over your mouth. One peice fits outside your mouth on your lips another piece fits between your lips and gums which you tighten down to hold in place. This has caused problems for some as it pinched the lips. The problem in using it as a dam is the big hole to breath in and out of it as a mask. Guess you could plug it up.

I expect my Hybrid today and will let you know how well it stabalizes between mouth and nose. The design does seem to recognize that they do act independently which is shy it has a peice that fits under your chin to support your mouth from just popping open and breakign the seal of the nasal pillows. Also the pillows have an adjustment to raise them to a different level in relation to your lips which would also help them maintain the seal at the nostrils.

I hope it works.
